i7: worth it for a gamer?

I went from a E6600 core 2 duo to i7 mainly because i was getting less FPS in games where i know i should be getting more, even games like Counterstrike Source which isnt particularly demanding i was strugling to maintain 50 FPS on average size maps. Now on i7 with everything on max on 1680x1050 i never get less than 100 FPS. I also get much smoother gameplay on on COD4, while it is a premium for the setup, i was an early adopter for C2D, so i had it for 2 years.

Struggling to maintain 50fps in CSS @ 1650x1050? Thats got to be down to the gfx card / poor overclock (possible an underclock, lol) / crap driver install.

it's just annoying when people dismiss new technology simply because it's expensive

We're dismissing it because it has no benefit for gaming. The title of the thread is "i7: worth it for a GAMER?" In fact, i7 is actually slower than Core2 in many benchmarks.

And you know what I find annoying? People who try and justify a bad investment they made, because they didn't do their research and just bought the most expensive thing out.

have to agree

My 7600GT gets over 100fps, borrowed a mates 8800GTS (320mb) and that nets me around 300fps

Don't need i7 to maintain 100fps in CSS at all...

Is it a bad investment when 6/8 cores come out ?, as i am looking at either a i7 or am3, because i will be keeping it a while and don't want to get a am2 or 775 and find 12/24 months time they fazed out the socket and yes i know sometimes the first gen mb of a new socket might not be able to use a later chip that the gamble i willing to take.
If you already got a am2+ or a c2d ( just throw a p2 in or gat a high dual or quad)then yes i can see your point but people who need a new mb,cpu and ram might aswell go for a am3 or i7 if they keeping it for a while.

I just looked at a mb and cpu and ram for 775 and it was just under 400 and the i7 was just under 500 now that not going mad on a i7 mb, to me that not bad really.

I am warming up to the i7 since a couple of motherboards i am looking at are around 170
I'm not sure if I'm in a minority but £170 is a huge sum of money for a motherboard!

Considering that one could buy a fast and very overclockable processor, decent chipset and 4GB of fast DDR2 for £200 I have to wonder if perhaps a few of my fellow forum members are Blinded-By-Science! :D

Just add GPU and enjoy your gaming!

i7: worth it for a gamer?
You know the term *gamer* is very loose, you could have one guy who likes to play Flight Sims on his 40" Sony LCD TV, it could be a WOW addict who likes to have three of his accounts open and running at the same time, it could be a professional Twitch-Shooter who regularly competes in Clan Matches, also there is the RTS Master (Star-Craft, Medieval etc).

Each example of gamer mentioned would have different requirements from their hardware (inc Monitors, peripherals etc) so really to answer the original question correctly you would have to work out what type of gamer you are!

To be honest if i was on a budget i wouldn't really look at i7 or am3 and yes £170 is a lot of money, but i want it to last me 2 or more years and I see a i7 or am3 kit lasting me longer than a 775 as i would like to drop a 6 core in later.
what i was looking at with 775 was about £120 mb and £150 to £200 cpu and either £43 for 4gb or £88 for 8gb so really i would save £100 to £150 but it depends what i went on.
To me £100 to £150 more now is worth it if i can just drop a 6 core in later.

if like me coming from amd socket 939 to i7, its far from a waste of money, trust me, :D best money i ever spent on parts, also will be even better when i get a couple of nvidia 275,s :D

I want to try a quad have been on my s939 to long.

The difference will be astronomical:) - well, at least it seemed that way to me, going from an athlon FX-55 (939) to a QX9650. Some CPU intensive games (like Colin Mcrea's DiRT etc) wouldn't do any more than 15 frames per second - EVEN at low resolutions - no matter what GFX card i put in. Wereas my Quad does 4-5 times this amount.

It's more extreme, of course going from socket 939 than, say a decent Dual core - or quad.

No point in trying to future proof for any length of time anymore.Intel/AMD will just change the socket on ya anyway!
Personally,I wouldn't bother with the i7 for gaming, but its more a case of if you want it,get it!

I7 is not pointless for gaming at all I cannot even be bothered to list them as this was discussed about 5 months ago search my post history but there are at least 4 maybe 5 top games out right now which show sizeable FPS boosts with I7.

What is pointless is buying a skt775 setup which is now over 3 years old.

I7 is slightly more than 775 but most gamers also do some encoding & ripping so right there alone I7 is a long way ahead and also multigpu setups (nvidia especially) see big gains over 775. Think X58 SLI can achieve around 98% scaling and X58 Crossfire slightly less. Most current reviews are BS as they favour 1 or the other no-one has done a comprehensive & recent SLI + Crossfire+I7 highend comparison yet with up to date drivers!!

If your really on a tight budget just get an X360 as almost all PC games for the forseeable future will just be buggy & unoptimised 360 ports anyway and sometimes I have found the 360 version has a lot more shader FX as they appear to target a 3 year old PC shader FX spec:(

Where have you really noticed the difference with i7 in gaming then AWPC?

Look stop it now.

Fact is leave the people who want to upgrade to it.

And leave the people still on s775 to game against i7 with no loss of performance.

One sees no gains with i7 over top s775 in gaming period

Now go play some games.:D

surely games will start having quad core support as default soon enough..

They do now.

Fact is I7 is a professional cpu.

Not a gamers choice.

Anyone thinking upgrading to i7 when playing games that will see big gains over s775 is deluded.

Unless you upgrade from a very old core 2duo such as a E6600, as i did, i noticed an increase straight away.

Balls to that at well.

I would argue a 3.8ghz dual 6600 (that I owned) is no a slouch compared to any i7 offering in games.

You're talking nonsense
