breathalisers in pubs and clubs

I don't think I need to pay a machine to tell me I'm ****** to be honest. :) Bus journeys are always more interesting when you're drunk, especially trying to balance on the seat with just your knees... Foolish but funny.

There is also the liability issue for the pub/club. If they are providing a service to indicate whether you are below the drink drive limit or not, you test negative and then get stopped and prosecuted on the way home for being over the limit then you could have come back against them.

I'm with the group that says don't drink at all if you are driving though.

why dont they have breathaliser machines in pubs and clubs?
to expensive ?

would you pay £1 to use such a machine ?

just a passing thought.

as they are a waste of time,

a) they aren't 100% accurate
b) you don't absorb it instantly.

So they are better for the mourning after, but not straight after you've been drinking.

we have a hand held breathalyser in work for using on patients (quicker than waiting for a blood alcohol level to return). it can give false positive results - blow into it within 2-3mins of a piece of airwaves chewing gum and you'll read near the breath drink drive limit!!

we are trying to see if we can do a small study comparing ours with a police issue handheld one and with the fullblown device in the police station to see if the airwaves effect is reproducible (different breathalysers use different methods to give result, some affected by chewing gum/mouthwash etc)

Possible. But risky. We have the police calibrated breathalisers at work and at my bosses house.

I had 3 pints and a barcadi and coke over the course of 5 hours one day at his house and was still below the legal limit by about 10% when leaving (had eaten as well) so depends on your body, time taken to drink, whether you have had food etc as to whether you would pass a roadside test tbh.

Interestingly enough my boss was over 4 times the legal limit.

To be safe though I would always suggest just 1 pint.

And the police can be annoying sometimes. I went to my local pub and there was a policeman outside with a car pulled over. I went in, had one pint and then left just as the car and policeman was pulling away (me in front). He followed me for 10 miles (I stuck to the speed limit) and then pulled me over.

He was just a local bobby so had no speed monitoring equipment and said that he pulled me over as I had consistantly being exceeding the speed limit by 6 mph. I stated my speedo said I had stuck to the limit. He gave me crud about he had been trained to follow cars and match their speed accurately to judge how fast they were going. I said how did he know his speedo was right and mine was wrong? I felt like saying what idiot would speed with a copper following them but I refrained.

He then asked if I had being drinking to which I said yes of course and really that wasn;t too hard to guess since he saw me pull into the pub and leave 10 minutes later but I had only had one (only 8 pm on a week day night). He said everybody always claim they have just had one and he was going to breathilise me and that by his calculation 20 minutes were up. I said it was only 15 minutes and I would wait another 5 please. So we did and I was negative to which he said I was telling the truth that I had only had one drink.

tbh you should drink nothing at all and drive, any amount of alcohol should be illegal.

now i drink extremely heavily, a lot of the time, so i am not one of those goody types etc.. but even the smallest amount of alcohol will still affect your reaction times etc, also it will stop those who cant handle alcohol having one pint or two and running someone over

Just to echo what has been said already; why bother risking it? Why risk your life, the life of the passengers in your car, in other cars, and pedestrians? It's a very unnecessary risk - and if you take it, then frankly you're an idiot.

do you drive tiered. one pint of weak beer (4% ish) will affect you a lot less than being tiered and for almost everyone will be under the limit. If I'm driving I will stick to 1/2-2 depending on how long it will be before driving.

I agree with AcidHell. There are more accidents and deaths caused from driving tired than alcohol.

I will never have more than one pint and drive. Some people may agrue that's too much but it's legal.

The problem is there is no way to legally judge tiredness with a roadside meter. If there was then the roads would be a safer place.

The other week me and my boss went to a meeting. We left at 2am, he drove 7 hours, we had a 7 hour meeting and then he drove 7 hours back. There was one break on each of the journeys and in total a 21 hour day.

That is far worse than drinking and driving IMO.

I was under the legal limit and was sure of it. If I had being over I would not have driven. Do you ever drive when tired?

I certainly wouldn't drive for 14 hours in a day.

I plan trips so if I know I've got to drive a significant distance I'll spread it over 2 days.

Planning a day with 14 hours of driving is dangerous. Very dangerous.
