Ahhh! Help me choose a hard drive - WD 320 RE3 vs WD 640 Black Vs F1 Raid

Hi,

I'll keep this short:
About to order system for work.
3D animation: Lightwave, photoshop, flash + M$ Office aplications, browsers etc.
Looking ideally for 500GB single platters for Raid0.
Will go to 320GB singles if need be.
WD would be nice (RE3's).

If the WD 500GB RE3 is single platter then job done.
Otherwise, I see that Seagate do one (500GB single) but lots of moaning about Seagate on these forums.

640GB probably is enough so can go to 320GB but then which WD / Samsung (F1)?

All work backed up on network so just looking for speed.

Hoping to order by lunch time.

Thanks as always.

Thanks IT Insider.

I personally have never had a problem with Seagates but often feel I'm ina minority. Granted, everything I've read says the .12 are basically the .11 fixed (with updated firmware) so should be good.

But, I also keep seeing references to Seagate putting some factory set limit on the drives to keep them on par with the WD green range. This will undo the benefit of being a single platter.

This brings me back to 320GB drives. Single platter for both Samsung and WD. WD seem to have the most +ve reviews so I'm back to my original 320GB RE3's.

Hold the phones....

WD 640GB Blacks are down to £60.

I repeat: "Ahhhhh!"

Right then, here's the choice: WD 320GB RE3, WD 640GB Black or Samsung 320GB F1 Raids?

Looking for real world speed for £60-£70 (and will be Raid 0).

(Go on, say WD 500GB RE3's...)

Im still using Sammy F1 320Gbs the none raid version.
Runnin 2 striped and noticed a huge increase in access times and pc/games loading.
They run very quiet, nice speeds too, unfortunatley I cant remember where I posted the links to the test results for the RAID Im using.

*ahem*

I went with the WD 500 RE3's (even though they 2 platter). Will let you know.

Figured for the money I can't go too wrong. If I don't think they're fast enough I'll try the Seagate's or the 320GB singles.

Just hope the person that has to use this set up is a bit deaf or the Antec's (900-2)are still nice and quiet!
