Scientists discover gene in dna that fights HIV, able to turn it on

Having had a quick scan, I couldn't quickly see how they were going to target/control the read-over mechanism, which is potentially a relatively dangerous thing to have on the loose in the genome.

After a quick read-through of the paper, they didn't do anything to the premature stop codon: they transfected a working copy of the gene into the cells and got them to produce the retrocyclin using that.

In the paper they did it using techniques you couldn't do to a living person, but it looks like they could just use some general gene-therapy techniques to do it. I wonder how effective the compounds would be in humans though.

Switch them all on and see what happens :-) As far as I'm concerned, mankind IS God. And we should be entitled to **** around with things as much as the Gods of traditional faiths did :-)

A little off-topic but bledd reminded me. Has anyone seen the Avon advert for some cream or other where the packaging looks just like the T-virus from Res Evil

This "junk" dna... isn't really junk, once they figure out how to activate it will give us all random "extraordinary abilitys". Telepathy, rapid cell regeneration etc

That's all they need, more people.

We need two mass leaflet drops in Africa (and subsideries)...

  1. Informing them that sex usually equals babies
  2. Some guidelines on STD's, most namely HIV!

That would probably solve a lot of their problems... but then again what's life without food, beer and sex ?
