How to airbrush a bonnet mural - loads of techniques [a project log]

I feel like I have borrowed a Brilliant book from the library only to find that the last 3 pages have been ripped out. :(
End my Misery & post the finished job.

I've got some bad news for you I'm afraid....

About a month ago I was supposed to start painting a computer project and then all went quiet - it was presumed to have have fallen through. So I styarted painting my bonnet instead. yesterday I got a call to say that it's back on. It's more important than the bonnet and there *should be* a project log for the PC I'm about to start too so it won't be toooo bad. I'll get as much done ont he bonet as I can in the meantime and keep the updates coming as fast as I can.

once the PC is done and dusted though, it will be back on track.

thanks for the interest guys, the next update should keep you going longer than the first 2 lol

Part 3

I still have not let on where this design is going, and I probably won’t…
The next step is to add a series of skulls to the lower section of the bonnet. These will be eventually pushed into the background and will not be so dominant as they are about to look.

I want the skulls to form some kind of symmetry, but at the same time I don’t want tem to be completely identical, if I was to try and do that then It would turn out even worse as they would never look the same. (does that make sense?)

I first of all draw one side of the skulls onto some paper, take a trace from it and using a lot of different processes I end up with a rough outline of the skulls on the bonnet.
They are drawn onto some 12”

I cut into the masking, around the basic shapes of the skulls. I only need the basic layout. The teeth will be free handed in. I’m using a special knife for this task- it’s a rotating blade theat gives smooth curves instead of a series of straight lines that form
a curve.

I start with a dark grey and blow a little bit of paint through the masking, pulling different sections off at a time.

Once all of the skulls are roughed in, I remove all of the masking and work free hand.

skodajpgs42.jpg

I’m going for high-contrast, cartoon like skulls – there is not going to be a lot of fine detail here; I’m going to make them bold.

I work back and forth with various shades of grey, black and white until I’m happy enough with the results.

The skulls then get a coat of lime candy.

Then I go in with dark green candy and cover about 90% of the skulls, only leaving the very bright parts in lime. I use a blue candy for the very darkest parts.

Once the design surrounding the skulls is complete, I’ll be going back to them with white and lime candy to pick out harsh highlights.

Everything is given a coat of intercoat clean and flattened down ready for the next step :)

Awesome stuff now I can see the pics. This going to be a rolling advert therefor an assortment of styles or just a freestyle expression?

An assortment of tecniques and effects, rather than styles I think. the elements of the design are very old school, but I'm going for the things that I used to look at for inspiration when I started painting. Even my mother sai 'arn't those flames a little passé' - they are, but I've always wanted something with old school flames painted on - so I did. I never really get the chance to paint my own stuff so it's nice to use some of the things that I've done on other peoples things.

the next step is going to be a 'typical' effect that I use. It's probably the most popular, most common thing I paint these days but it never fails to look excelent - realistic fire, in green. (I'll never get bored of it)

off topic - but another one of the 512 lives in Brighton, just round the corner from me.

cool!

there is a guy who keeps a record of the ones still ont he road. he has around 150 on his books. mine was not on, so there will be some kicking around not on the list.

he says mine originally came from cornwall. that might explain the milage ha ha
