Part 3
I still have not let on where this design is going, and I probably won’t…
The next step is to add a series of skulls to the lower section of the bonnet. These will be eventually pushed into the background and will not be so dominant as they are about to look.
I want the skulls to form some kind of symmetry, but at the same time I don’t want tem to be completely identical, if I was to try and do that then It would turn out even worse as they would never look the same. (does that make sense?)
I first of all draw one side of the skulls onto some paper, take a trace from it and using a lot of different processes I end up with a rough outline of the skulls on the bonnet.
They are drawn onto some 12”
I cut into the masking, around the basic shapes of the skulls. I only need the basic layout. The teeth will be free handed in. I’m using a special knife for this task- it’s a rotating blade theat gives smooth curves instead of a series of straight lines that form
a curve.

I start with a dark grey and blow a little bit of paint through the masking, pulling different sections off at a time.
Once all of the skulls are roughed in, I remove all of the masking and work free hand.
I’m going for high-contrast, cartoon like skulls – there is not going to be a lot of fine detail here; I’m going to make them bold.
I work back and forth with various shades of grey, black and white until I’m happy enough with the results.
The skulls then get a coat of lime candy.
Then I go in with dark green candy and cover about 90% of the skulls, only leaving the very bright parts in lime. I use a blue candy for the very darkest parts.
Once the design surrounding the skulls is complete, I’ll be going back to them with white and lime candy to pick out harsh highlights.
Everything is given a coat of intercoat clean and flattened down ready for the next step
