Dell 2408WFP or NEC MultiSync 24WMGX3

have you considered whether you want a wide gamut or normal gamut screen? this could sway your decision i think, and depends on the content you are using i suppose. Dell is extended, NEC is not

Got a 2408 myself and wouldn't replace it for anything else, well actually thats a lie I'm looking at the 3008. Would highly recommend that screen to you but then again I have never tried the NEC screen. Picture quality is amazing, vibrant colour and the viewing angles are perfect.

well i've used both and they are both very good. for me, i'd have the Dell as a desktop screen but thats for different reasons than you are likely to chose. i dont do photo work, and any slight colour work i might do i wouldnt mind the extended gamut as it wouldnt matter. if i were doing a lot of photo work and felt extended gamut was going to be a problem, i'd prob be safe and stick with an sRGB space monitor like the NEC 24WMGX3 or 2490WUXi. It's a really tough call, but i would advise reading about extended gamuts before you commit as it would be a shame not to be aware before you buy

Just a little bit of info (which you may or may not know already!), I am not trying to sway your decision by stating it, but more to make sure you don't choose one monitor based upon incorrect facts about the other.

The original revision of the 2408, the A00 did have quite bad input lag. The following revision, the A01 (not sure if there has since been an A02, haven't kept track) reduced this input lag considerably so that it is no longer a problem at all (it is by no means the best monitor input lag wise, but I suspect that isn't what you are looking for anyway).

This may well be a moot point but I thought it would be worth mentioning as it all too often arises when the 2408 is being discussed.

Edit: And yes I do have a 2408, would thoroughly recommend it, but I wouldn't have the faintest idea about whether it is preferrable to the NEC for your needs.

I would really love to be able to see them both with my eyes to compare but nowhere round here have either of them for me to witness which is a shame.

Reading website and reviews is not the same as being able to witness them both to see what they like to out eyes.

God this is a tough call.

Thank you for this information, so what revision are Overclockers selling then just incase I order one.

I am not sure, the product description doesn't say. You can try sending them a message via the WebNote system on their website and asking, but I can't guarantee they would be able to tell you.

I would hope that their stock is of the latest revision as people have been receiving A01 monitors since before Christmas (admittedly from different e-tailers but you could assume OcUK stock would be the same), but it is definitely best to try asking them.

Simon since you got this monitor what is it like viewing at a angle does the colour alter?

For me, the viewing angles are excellent, colours barely alter even when you are looking at it near enough side on.

However you may be more sensitive to colour changes than me, working in photography, and find it does not meet your requirements (but I'd be surprised if this was the case, even for the most sensitive of eyes!).

I know there are other people on this forum with the monitor, so hopefully some of them will turn up in here and they can give you their opinion of the viewing angles.

i had 2 2408wfp's both were faulty, got the nec now, i can safely say that the "pictures" i look at on my screen look much better on my nec than compared to the dells

OcUK are selling the A01 rev afaik

in regards to viewing angles, they are pretty comparable on both....both are using VA based panels so are similar in this regard

Indecision

What's the Dell like for gaming?

I am looking for a new 24" panel and viewing angles and gaming are the main priorities.

Great. See Baddass's review on it's timing. I don;t notice any ghosting in games.

That review is based on the A00 revision I believe, the input lag issues have been near enough sorted with the A01 revision. The rest of the (very good) review should still stand however! :)
