Rumour: 3D Realms Shuts Down

I can't believe that any true gamer would be happy with this news or think they "deserve" this. Just because a game has been in development for 12 years doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to suck. I can think of many games with a long development process that turned out great.

Gutted :(

It's good riddance because they spent so long on a game that wouldn't have been that popular anyway. They keep leaking out bits of information about DNF every few years, thinking that people care, but hey don't. DNF would have just been another game you played for a day then never played again, look at Doom 3. Times have moved on, but they didn't adapt.

What has Doom 3 got to do with anything? Some of you boys are being awfully callus about the demise of a developer.

After 12 years of development without any income from a new title and in such a harsh climate this is hardly unexpected though, it's just a shame that this will be their legacy.

I just hope we get to see the legend that is DNF in some form or another. Maybe this will get picked up by another dev, but if it does, it will have an excuse if it's turd.

What a waste.

I feel sorry for the employees, imagine what their cv's are going to be like

Duke nuken forever 1997 to 2009 (unreleased)

Lets face it if you need things finnished you aint going to hire them

i reckon this may be a publicity stunt

What i think too.

10+ years in the making, why suddenly news of closure right now? why not during the peak of the economic situation? why not even earlier?!

They know DNF is kind of a huge deal so I reckon something big is going to happen soon, like Duke BUSTING THROUGH the offices of 3DR looking for gum then someone catches it on video and a viral campaign launches on youtube or something.

Eff yeah.

Indeed, a friend (journo) of 3dr played a part of it too a while back!

One of the (ex) employees HAS to start leaking stuff any day now if this is true (which it seems it is).

Thats really sad news to be honest, i know its been a long time but still makes you wonder what they were actually doing. I always expected them to release the game and it would have been massive and incredible.
But now we will never know.

Sad news to see a developer going down the tube but after over a decade of no-shows it's hardly surprising. Even if DNF had seen the light of day within the next 12months I can't see how it's drawn-out development time could have let the finished product keep pace with the current crop of next gen titles. Apogee are saying they still retain the Duke license though so it might not be all doom and gloom. In the current economic climate this may well just be a consolidation exercise as much as anything - DNF isn't necessarily canned.

From a retail perspective this is going to be an absolutely nightmate! Imagine having the contact/reassure/refund tens years worth of preorder customers!

Unlucky, feel sorry for the die hard fans that waited with a glimmer of hope each day that something would come and then the kick in the face that is this :D.

I doubt it will ever come now, it leaves a legacy and I guess 3D Realms would want to keep that, they won't hand over the rights.
