ATI Radeon 5870 and 5870X2 specs revealed?

Why would the the X2 variant be twice as fast as the 4870X2 when you say the 5870 will only be 60% faster than the 4870?

As for Crysis, I think I have come to hate the game. I used to enjoy running around the jungle, but the game inconsistent performance just annoys me these days. Will be uninstalling that and Warhead and may re-install them some years down the line - or just get a console version :)

i have read one article that says 2x the performance of a 4870.

I guess some people say that for a 100% increase? don't know, i have seen that quite often.

If they get these new cards out the door before Nvidia there market share will decrease by a big margin, along with an influx of 2nd hand GTX cards for sale ;)

Well if the rumours are to be believed and i am stringly reluctent to accept rumour at face value we have a situation where Ati might possibly have their new cards out in time for the refresh of those cards to be competing with nvidias next new card not good for us customers if you ask me. We can only hope if Ati do get that big a jump that they stick to their pricing policy and don't try to milk us for a period of time.

That is true actually, if ATI have no competition what so ever, they might be tempted to stick the prices up if they are crowned the performance kings into the new year, but with ATI they normally do have a more generous pricing structure, and if they manage to not get too greedy, they will get more sales ;)

The card that we call RV870, and that should replace RV790 and RV780, won't be launching in Q3. Many have expected that this card will launch either in late Q2 or early Q3, but we are hearing that this card might be pushed to later this year, but that it will instantly come with DirectX 11 support.

This might mean that the original RV870 got canceled, and that the new DirectX 11 card will take over, simply as Nvidia is probably going directly to DirectX 11 in Q4, with its GT300.

ATI has launched two new cards based on RV740 and RV790, and we don’t expect anything new before back to school, which promises a quite boring Q2 and Q3. Lets hope Q4 will have some serious surprises.

Even more bad news as well, while the 5 series are just tweaked 4890's, the GT300's are supposedly a brand new arc. :D

It does not really matter tbh as ati have already said that when they designed this architecture it was to be for the future. It will only be bad news if the speed of the new 5 series is no where near as good as the 300 series. The 4870 is around twice as fast as the 3870 so if the 5870 is around the same again then there is no worry. Ati look to be in much better shape for the next round if release dates are to be believed. Nv look like they need a new arc anyway as they can't even do dx 10.1 never mind dx 11 where as ati cards already have some features on there cards which will be used in dx 11.

I was talking to you about this before but I thought i'd put my thoughts in here too.

After the GT200 series I don't think nVidia had any choice but to go back for a totally new architecture. Their dies were absolutely monolithic and cost a packet to make, and there can't have been a lot of profits even at launch.

Then, when RV770 rolled into town, that was ATI's new architecture, and it caught everyone by surprise. Matched the GTX260 performance for a lot less. Suddenly nVidia were forced to drop the price of a product that hadn't had time to mature. The price of the 260 and 280 dropped like a stone overnight.

Despite the fact that both ATI and nVidia are matched in every price point, financially ATI won this by a landslide. Of course, as end users all we got were powerful cheap cards, lots of choice, so it's win-win.

I would put my house on ATI having RV870 good to go within a month to six weeks. But they don't need to bother. There's no competition and it's just taking sales away from RV770.

I think they'll just sit tight and reap the benefits of HD4770 and the improvements to the 40nm process it's likely to bring.

Adding extra power to an architecture that has plenty of room for improvement isn't exactly a new thing. It's been going on for years. I know I don't mind - it's better than just having the exact same cards re-hashed under a new name. At least it brings extra power.

I do feel myself it is a safer bet going with the upgrade path for ati as it meant scale very well as by now they must know the chip quite well and almost everything gone right for them with the 4*** series.
I don't think they will chase after nvidia if nvidia go with the big cores again but nvidia don't need another big core like the last one which they had problems scaling it down and the high cost when in a price war with ati.
But we need both company's are each other throats like with the 4850/9800+ and 260/4870.

Sounds like the next release of cards ATI will have finally won the performance war and will convert a lot of Nvidia fanboys out there (must admit im one of them) and will be tempted to sell off my GTX295 to get the money together for ATI's new offering, if it beats the 295 hands down, of course ;)

Think you will need to wait for the 5870x2 for that as i don't think the 5870 will beat it hands down or even if it will beat it but you can be sure that a 5870x2 will beat it by a good margin as even the 4890x2 should be faster than a gtx295 if its released.

if ATI choose to release the 5870 near the end of the year isn't that a bit too late? if Nvidia's cards are coming with a brand new architecture in Q1 2010 that is pretty soon after, in other words would it even be worth getting a 5870?.

Look at the history between Amd/Intel ATI/NV with users & you can answer you own question why. We live in a world of personal preference based on various reasons for the most part & can take great effort on the competing products for a person to change based on personal requirements.

If ATI do manage to bring there cards out months before Nvidia manage to, then I think that many people that have used Nvidia cards for years would be tempted to jump ship and go with ATI, which would hurt Nvidia pretty badly, especially when they are investing heavily in a new arc that wont be finished until early in 2010, I doubt people will wait until these cards come out tbh

Still got my 8800GTS.... have missed the current generation of GFX cards as mine is more than adequate for the games i play... but i may upgrade to this :D

I would agree there is no point in Ati releasing a newer card while they have their latest one's out except for one reason. Being able to bring out a dx11 card months before nvidia has a kudos attached to it as much as the performance crown to some. You only have to look at how many times the jibe has been used against nvidia about dx10.1 which nvidia never got round to for whatever reason.

I think if Ati are able to release the 5xxx series soon they will if it is dx11 compliant and Ati are a little further in dx11 compliance then nvidia as their cards have had some of the features for a while. I just don't want another period where either company is too far behind because we all know what happens then and it isn't good for us.

why are you so hung up on whether its a new architecture? Their is nothing wrong with the 4xxx series architecture, so if its just scaled up, thats fine by me.

After all the 5800Ultra was a whole new architecture................
