Australia trips

Nothing 'wrong' with it, just not much to do there in comparison to Sydney. Melbourne can be done in a couple of days (esp the city) Crowne Casino is good if you can get there - in the city.

Didn't do the Great Ocean Road trip so can't comment on that.

Plus the weather is changeable, if you like UK you'll like Melbourne ;)

Depends on what you like doing. Nightlife is amazing in Melbourne, I on arrived on friday and had to leave monday. On friday i went to a live music night, saturday to a hard dance festival (Q-Dance) and sunday went to the market in the day and had a few beers at a bar at night.
Theres loads of great shops and other things to do like a huge in door climbing wall.
Weather wise, i went in december, 19th to 22 i think. and i was walking around in shorts and tshirt. It was cool but still sunny

Melbourne is great fun, Sydney is also great but Melbourne is so much more chilled out, Sydney is like the London of Australia, Melbourne is very relaxed and generally 'cool'

camping in campsites/national parks/rough, staying in peoples houses, eating very cheaply, hitch-hiking. Took a bus once. There was a two week part where i only managed to spend £20-30!

That's mighty impressive then, surely you must have been somewhat restricted in the things you could do on that budget?

understatement of the year!

£6 a day doesnt allow for even the cheapest hostel, then im guessing you ate and drank something aswell

I was on £20 a day and was do able

Hmmm Liveaboard dive trips - about $700 for 3 days including getting your PADI certificate and a double cabin. Sounds awesome, whats the catch?

yeah well a lot of accomodation was free/very cheap. The great barrier reef came in at an EXTRA £90 IIRC. As for other stuff.. i don't think there are many things you can't do on the cheap in AUS. fraser island for example, you can pay stupid amounts and either hire a 4x4 or join a tour group. We just got the ferry accross and saw it in the best way possible: by walking (and also minimising our impact on such a beautiful island, the Autralians really don't have any respect for it - "when you leave, leave only your footprints", yeah.. not to mention the island being ripped apart by 4x4 tour buses).

Meeting the some of the most interesting people ever is free, climbing the highest mountain in queensland is free, seeing the wildlife and natural features of the landscape (a heck of a lot of waterfalls!) is free, swimming in the oceans, lakes and plunge pools is free..

We even missed a bunch of people who offered us a trip on their own boat for a few days out to a reef island that would have been free by a few hours. gutted.

That would be a sweet deal, have you obtained that quote already?

I did a Learn to Dive course with ProDive from Cairns, similar price. It was 2 days classroom/pool instruction, then 3 days liveaboard on the reef, where you complete the rest of your training dives and have some free ones.
Check the details as there will probably be environmental/fuel supplements (about $50 in total) and if you're qualifying you'll have to pay for a dive medical too (again about $50).
The food onboard was great (and plentiful), instructors were really good and professional, boat was really nice too.
