Give it a few months and the Daily Mail will be claiming that they started it all. You'll see retrospective articles with side-captions entitled "How the Mail led the way".

I don't think they should get expenses at all - they should get a capped payment for a second home and leave it at that.
I was going to put that they shouldn't get any at all but some constituencies are quite far from London, and we either let them have a second home or pay for them to stay at a posh hotel.
At least with a capped system, if they waste it on a "moat cleaner" then they don't have it to spend on a 28th sofa.

Indeed the guys are in a job where every 4 years they can be voted out. They have to live in London (one of the most expensive cities in the world) AND still work in their constituencies. So they cream a bit off the top? Who cares.
Shame the DM doesn't start a crusade against the bankers who have creamed 100s of millions off the top in the last decade. 10 grand over 4 years .... who cares?
You have plebs like Jonathan ross getting millions of taxpayers money for "entertainment" and some presenters are on 100k of taxpayers money. Let's get something in to perspective. Also the shoddy level of journalism (using the term loosely is appauling)
They didn't claim for teabags etc. These were just other items on a receipt with the legitimate item for which the claim was made.
If there is sufficient evidence then lets prosecute but Britain's shame lol Belgian news has mentioned nothing about it but well Brazilian floods, Sri Lankan problems and Pakistan's war on terror are much more newsworthy topics but DM decides this is important.

So they've been essentially stealing taxpayers' money? Money that we go to court if we don't pay. Ridiculous. String up those responsible I say and change the system that is so easy to abuse!
This whole thing is ridiculous and as stated above if someone was claiming disability allowance they weren't entitled to they would get trawled through the courts.
Their whole attitude of "It was a mistake" "It was with-in the rules" should not wash, and they should be fully investigated all the way to the PM and David Cameron and sentences handed out as appropriate.
The whole thing really is disgusting, claiming dog food,taps, mortgages for second homes, outrageous.

its all outrageous they claim the whole life as an expensive and have a wage as aswell.
window cleaners, repairs , TV bills, phone bills , newspaper bills, kitchens , furniture , white goods , carpets , curtains , beds.
its a joke! you know how you can get those grants if your dirt poor for essential goods those grants dont even cover beds , washing machines , fridges , freezers etc.
if they arent essential to anyone else i think its a joke that MP's can claim them as expensives. they should be shot.

I am in full support of this. MP's who swindles their way into 10's of thousands of pounds of tax payers money should not simply be told "look just give it back k?" they should be treated the same as anyone else who has done something like this.

For once I have to agree with you.
I care. It's my money they're stealing, and if I did what they did, I'd be jailed for it. One law for all; not one law for them and one law for us.

Because there's little we can do about it, since the bankers are part of private enterprise. But the politicians are our representatives and paid from our taxes; they have an immediate responsibility to us.

Exactly, they are just a bunch of crooks, why do they need to claim council tax/mortgages/bills/beds/carpets/TV's/bathrooms/Home cinema equipment etc etc.
The whole expenses template needs to be re-drawn, and not by the people who will be claiming said expenses, but by an outside party with strict rules on what they can and cannot put through.

Explain. If you were an MP and had done what they did, you wouldn't be jailed as it isn't illegal. Maybe the rules are stupidly lax, I can tell you're morally outraged, it still doesn't make their actions illegal.
Last time I checked, fraud was illegal. A number of MPs have committed the crime of fraud. This is a prosecutable offence.
I haven't claimed that they've all broken the law. Plenty of them haven't. Some have. We should prosecute those who have.
Even the South Africans got this right.
This is a very important issue because British soliders are getting killed and having there arms and legs blown off because there isn't enough funding to buy them the right kit, yet amazingly our politicians have no problems finding millions of pounds for to sustain there dishonest corrupt racketeering.
