Dailys Mail launch a crusade to prosecute politicans

I have to say I for one don't actuall care :S. I'm more interested in them doing their jobs well than their expenses - shame they aren't doing a better job...

I knew MP's were on the gravy train but I'm shocked by what they can claim for within the rules. It needs stopped, full disclosure with receipts published on the internet for all to see. A complete overhaul of what can be claimed and checks and balances in place so this does not happen again.

This is a very important issue because British soliders are getting killed and having there arms and legs blown off because there isn't enough funding to buy them the right kit, yet amazingly our politicians have no problems finding millions of pounds for to sustain there dishonest corrupt racketeering.
Millions? You think there are millions of pounds being overclaimed by MPs? If you want to look at crazy spending consider the Eurofighter, a waste of money in an aircraft that doesn't meet our needs, and Gordon has just pushed through the Tranche 3 payment which itself is about £2bn (Eurofighter in total is costing the UK over £20bn) That's defence budget spending too that could have directly gone to support troops with needed items.

Benefit fraudsters lose everything as well as their freedom if caught. Rightly so aswell.

How is what these scumbags are doing any different. Not to mention this is our ****ing money they are spending on home cinemas and "moat cleaning".

If your rich enough to have a moat clean it ya ****ing self.

Its not a worthy cause. The reason everyone is angry is because journalists like those who work for the dailymail have hyped the whole nation into a frnezy about it. The money they've wasted is a drop in the ocean compared to other wastes of the tax payers money. Get over it, Britain.

Infact, I'm going to say well done daily mail, you've actually done it, you've actually convinced some of the more sensible members of this forum that your views are worth listening to.

 I think thats my first rolly eyes and its well deserved i feel.

(1) Why isn't it a worthy cause?

(2) The Telegraph started this (not the Daily Mail) and they didn't hype anything. The unembroidered facts are more than sufficient to raise the blood pressure of any rightminded taxpayer.

(3) If you think fraud and corruption are perfectly legitimate activities for elected politicians, I suggest you emigrate to a third world nation (or a Muslim one) where this sort of thing is considered acceptable. Let me know how that works out for you.

(4) It might be a drop in the bucket when compared to other forms of waste, but that doesn't make it a non-issue. Some of these MPs have committed prosecutable offences.

Of all newspapers to be launching such a crusade I think the Daily Mail is least qualified to comment...you all honestly think employees of the Daily Mail have never done exactly the same thing as they are crusading against? How stupid.

I couldnt care less if daily mail employees are taking advantage of expenses, as DM's money has little to do with me. The public purse on the other hand...

Exactly. I'm sure there's tons of expsense fiddling that goes on in the private sector, but to compare it to this is missing the whole point.

Unfortunately it's highly doubtful anyone will get prosecuted over this except for the person who's being done for fraud (the name escapes me but he kept claiming on a mortgage loan long after it was paid off). This is also why Hazel Blears refused to apologize, because it was 'technically within the rules'. What a ****ing cow.

I agree that they should be prosecuted for the worst offenders and they should loose their jobs.

I can;t remeber who these two were but one MP claimed £800 per month for a 2nd home in London (flat) and he rented it out to a fellow MP who also then claimed the rent. When he submitted his expenses how could he forget that he never used the flat and had it rented out to another MP? Cleary he thought he could get away claiming for a 2nd home and that is fraud in my book.

And the other MP claimed £800 per month for a mortgage purely on his bank statement and he declared that it was a mortgage payment to another bank. It truns out it was to a savings account! When this was queried and spotted by the finance office he just said he would cover the money claimed with receipts for white goods and no apology. Yet again I ask, how many people would not realise how many mortgages they have.

These are just two examples which are far beyond a "simple mistake" and have being delibrate fraud IMO unless the people concerned are idiots and are not in touch with reality in which case they are not fit to their job.

Explain. If you were an MP and had done what they did, you wouldn't be jailed as it isn't illegal. Maybe the rules are stupidly lax, I can tell you're morally outraged, it still doesn't make their actions illegal.

Definition of fraud is that it was done with intent. Although some of the cases brought to light are within the rules and are just morally questionable there have certainly being cases which fall within the definition of fraud and are hence illegal.

So they've been essentially stealing taxpayers' money? Money that we go to court if we don't pay. Ridiculous. String up those responsible I say and change the system that is so easy to abuse!

In an ideal world I'd rather keep the current system and instead employ good honest people to do the job.

Fat chance of that happening though.
