This is probably in my cars manual however I don't have it to hand at present. Generally, what does the fuel warning light represent? Is it an indication to fill up immediately or simply that there's a specific amount left in the tank - if so, how much?

Warning light came on for the first time last night, I usually don't let it get that low.

:)

My 1.2 Punto used to get about 50 miles from the light, not sure on the Focus yet, don't really want to find out either, gonna look it up in teh manual.

Mine beeps and turns on when the trip computer says there is 50 miles left in the tank, on my old astra it was when it drifted into the red zone (not to be confused with the danger zone)

in mine (st24) i have been known to drive my round trip to work (approx 20miles) for 3 days from when the light goes on. Nothing to worry about, I am yet to run out of fuel, it is a good idea however to fill up before the fuel light goes on!

Red zone/danger zone?

The fuel light comes on when my fuel gauge gets to 0.
Will be when you have a gallon left.

Ah, sounds reasonable.

What's the opinion on this then? Should I pretty much keep it above the fuel light at all times or let it slip now and again?

Letting the tank go empty, surely that must cause all sorts of problems?

Aside from leaving you stranded at the side of the road, not really. Unless it's a diesel.

I tend to just wait for my fuel light to come on, then head for a petrol station, or at least plan my next journey so that I end up going past one.

Focus ST light comes on when the fuel remaining hits 50 miles, its stupidly long but I guess if you were to rag it then you would get a lot less than 50 miles

a lot of people will tell you that if you let your tank run low you will get all the crap in the bottom of the tank into your engine, but in reality unless you have a diesel and actually let it run dry you aint going to have a problem. ON my previous car (Renault 19) I had a digital readout with fuel remaining and as soon as it reached 1gal the fuel warning light would come on. Its the same on the Megane I have now although I now have a digital readout and a needle.
