i had 2 jack rusells one passed away 3 years ago and the other 4 months back aged 14.

No i feel i am ready for another dog thing is i have a 6 year old boy and a baby due in around 5 weeks so i am looking to get a dog in the early part of next year. I just need to work out the best breed for me. I adore JRT but fancy something different

so far i am thinking about

Labrador
mastif
German Shepard
rotwieler

anyone own any of them with young children.?

German Shepherd would be my choice. Pretty much the entire family has owned one at some point and every one has been spot on around kids of all ages. Take the time to pick the puppy who looks to have a temperament to cope with a household of kids.

What kind of house do you have? For a Mastiff you need LOTS of room.

Your options are really a Lab or an Alsation from that list TBH.

Labradors, Alsations and Dobermans are very friendly with young children, we own and have had these dogs all my life. Obviously they need to be brought up well.

Really cant think why someone would want a mastif or rotwieler round kids? is that common sense or just me?

Round kids and a companion I'd early choose a labrador.

Mastifs and Rotwielers can be the softest dogs in the entire world if raised correctly, the dogs you really need to watch around kids are collies.

They are so smart that if a kid annoys them they will snap, where as rottys/stafs/mastifs have such a high pain threashold that nothing bothers them and will sit happily while kids jump all over them.

gsd are nice ,

all those breeds have good reputations with kids, dont base opinions on the old bad dog you read about in the newspapers

tbh I think it comes down to you, I don't mean to sound rude but unless you have the time to commit to a GSD I wouldn't suggest getting one, they need a lot of time with one person, none of this 10 min here/10 min there, when growing up they need to be with the masters almost constantly, apart from work (where my GF would be in the house) Max, the white GSD above, won't leave my side, if I go out he goes out, simple. It has gotten to the point that the pubs I drink in are the ones that allow dogs :)
