new dog

Get a Labrador. When I was younger we had a golden lab and they are really nice dogs. At the moment I got a brown and a black labrador, they wouldn't hurt a fly.. mine are stupid as hell but really playful and fun to be around.

Honey is ok for doggies, especailly with Pork. Helps to kill all the nasty bacteria that live in it raw and cooked. :(

Excuse me? What bacteria live in raw pork? All known bacterial problems have been eradicated in british pork and the actual mention of it is a sore point for all farmers.

Its like saying the the british cows still suffer from CJD etc.

If you look at the stats you are more likely to get bitten off a border collie than any other dog, but because they are not used as fighting dogs/guard dogs/police dogs no one cares.

A dog is only as viscious as its owner lets it.

We had Max in to get xrays on his hips the other day, sedated aswell, which I wasnt there for, when I picked him up I asked if he had went for any of the vets/nurses the vet told me this

"yeah he turned to bite me and just mouthed me, I found it quite pathetic" I took it as a compliment as I have seen Max chew through marrow bones/ribs/turkey legs like they were nothing.

Although I semi agree with the biting comment it's not quite that clear cut. Collies wil nip, literally just close their jaws slightly (like they do with sheep), whereas other dogs will generally bite. We had a collie cross when from before I was born to about 4 years ago (19! years) and she gave me a nip every so often when I was a child if I stood on her tail or something but they never hurt. She was perfect with us other than that, and far smarter than any other dog I have known, would have probably protected us to her death. Having said that my mum always points out she wasn't particularly good with other children...

They also need gallons of excercise.

OP go for a working dog, generally from a good breeder they will be far less likely to develop problems than more showy dogs.

having revisited this thread I now have a 6 month old daughter and no dog as yet as we decided to wait. My local shelter has some lurcher pups looking for a home and am tempted to go and take a look, so what are lurchers like? If it helps I really enjoyed owning 2 jrt and like walking across the fields and exploring the little woodland thickets near me.

If you liked owning JRT, why not get one again. I have a JRT and a German Shepard.

If you are worried what a they would do with your young child, then just make sure it would be supervised.

Also if oyu get a pup easier to socialise with your kid.
