3D Realms sued over Duke Nukem Forever

I think the market is still there for the duke nukem series, although starting a fresh game maybe a better idea as DNF is starting to **** everyone off.

If the guys were good programmers at 3D Realms, they would have made their own engine for the game by now. John Carmack is on his 5th I think while DNF has been in development.

I've seen a video from a beta leak and it was great. It looked great! No idea why the cancel it. Sue 3d realms won't make any difference though...
Do you mean this?

Looking at that makes me hugely disappointed, just that small bunch of clips made me lol a number of times, it looks like the Duke humour really was alive and kicking.
I'd love for this to get picked up and finished, it'd be a no-brainer purchase for me.

This lawsuit could actually help DNF actually get finished imo. Think about it; 3DR will be forced to sell all their assets in order to pay back any outstanding debts, the source code for DNF will probably be construed as an asset and they may be forced to sell it on to another developer.

Question is, would another developer want it?

It would depend on how much it would cost a developer to buy, how much it would cost to complete and would they make a profit from the sales. I believe people would buy it purely to see why it took so long which could then create the market to relaunch the duke nukem franchise

Original TF2 was going along very different lines, and got canned, then they started doing something similiar to BF2 and then that got canned, then they did nothing for about 5 years before starting on the current incarnation.

Talk about stealing a wage, did DNF actually ever exist beyond a few tech demos or were the 3D Realms folk just hoping to work on it until retirement age? :p

If the game was almost complete then why didn't Take Two just give them a bit more cash so they could finish it and at least get something back on their investment?

What the hell have the 3D Realms staff being doing with $12m over 12yrs and yet they still have nothing to show for it?

Theres a big different tf2 didn't have 12million pumped into it then the company didn't produce the goods and folded

3dr did NOT get 12 million the game was almost entirely internally funded. The 12 million was for distribution rights not game development, gt interactive got the 12 million not 3dr.

See above...

TF2 took what, 10 years? Nobody complained about that taking too long....
Yeah they did. Back in its early incarnations there was plenty of complaint about the length of time it was taking. Then they scrapped it, and told everybody they were, so people stopped waiting for it to appear. The modern incarnation started up years later.

Apart from the fact that they didn't get the 12 million, and they switched engines several times so i dont get why the clock wasn't reset when that happened. Guess the 12 years bandwagon seems "cooler".
Why would they deserve a restart when they switched engines?

"Oh you're changing engines again? Yeah, cool, we'll just pretend the last four years of waiting for you to release it on this engine never happened."

want[/i] it?

What should be largely finished code with a bit of polish, released under another name to make an easy buck or two, who wouldn't want it? At worst it could sit on the sidelines as something to do on a rainy day. It's not like a game dev would have much to loose if they release it and its hump, they'll just blame it on the whole fiasco that is 3DR.

Because obviously stuff needs to be recoded for the new engine, its not as if they can just change engines bung everything in and its gonna work with no problems. And as time passed the stuff they had got dated looking models textures and sounds had to be redone. Every time it was probably like starting from scratch, and last i read the current version is a little over 2 years old.

12 years in total but not so for the current status of the game. I could understand the 12 year rhetoric if they were on the same engine etc but this isn't the case.

I presume he means why do they deserve a restart if THEY chose to change engines? Choosing the engine is just a normal part of the development cycle. If they chose wrong, and more than once, more fool them!
