I don't usually beleive what I read in the press but is this a joke?

Here's an idea, why not get rid of the outdated shirt/tie/blazer uniform. Move on, invent something new ffs.

Aha, one of my mates passed out on the bus because someone peanutted his tie so hard he couldn't breath.

Had to cut it off (Y)

If he couldn't breath then you were doing it wrong :S

As for the topic itself, it'll be almost entirely down to the school wanting a smarter uniform, the H&S is just a fringe benefit so to speak and has probably been highlighted by the media rather than the schools.

Schools have raised concerns about ties catching fire in science lessons, getting trapped in technology equipment

Frankly I think this makes sense. Alternatively ties should be removed in such lessons, or tucked inside a shirt/whatever.

I'm not against this.

I don't see what the issue is really, I hate the culture back home of safety for safety's sake like banning ball games in the playground and safety specs for conkers etc. But this sounds pretty reasonable to me. The amount kids fight at school, peanuts, the issue with short stubby ties and lab safety makes clip on ties a sensible option.

It won't lead to a nation of people unable to do up a tie, all the Americans I work with seem to manage to tie theirs despite not having to wear them when they were at school.

Next kids will be required to wear Velcro shoes because laces could trip them up.

Why would they be taking the mick? It would be safer for the children because the tie couldn't be used as a weapon (I know, I know; that rarely - if ever - happens, however the possibility is reason enough for this country); it would force all the school kids to have a "uniform" appearance to their uniform, as opposed to the "2kool 4 skool I-can-dress-my-self-but-can't-be-arsed" look where kids have their ties tied in such a fashion that it gives them about 4" worth of tie and a knot about a foot across (OK, slight exaggeration); and it would try to teach the kids to take pride in their appearance.

I think it's frustrating to see kids walking to school looking like a sack of **** tied up in the middle - do they have no self-respect?

I would try to agree but that would make me a raging hypocrite, my secondry school went from shirt/tie to polo shirst (a horrible sky blue) and I always used to wear a long sleeved t-shirt underneath them and cut the buttons off them so I didn't have to do them up.

I think kids in general will always rebel against uniform, everyone always telling them to be indevidual etc etc and then being told "you all have to look exactly the same", some kids just won't take that idea, I didn't.

Oddly enough though, after the shirts went we did all look much better. Problem with shirts/ties is everyone wore them differantly, differant style shirts differant ways of wearing a tie, but with polo shirts there is only so much you can do with them.

Kids will always find a way of making themselves stand out against each other.

If it's not tie length, it's skirt length.

If it's not skirts, it's shoes (Kickers were the in thing when I was at school).

Or hair, or choice of bag, or how you wear your socks, or whatever.

They will always find some way to differentiate themselves and pick on the ones who haven't kept up. Kids (especially teenage girls) are mean, and often very creative.

I suppose every institution and business nowadays is terrified of being sued, which may be another factor that they don't want to publicly admit.

That's because we're based around a society where law has become more meaningful in a business sense than around morality. The rise of these InjuryLawyers4U and other easily accessible companies really grind my gears. People are ridiculously selfish these days to the point whereby they'll do ANYTHING for money even if that includes claiming compensation where none is due.

Take me, I live in a privately rented student house. The light fitting in the toilet fell one metre and smashed me on the head. It hurt like hell and I had a bruise. Suiing my landlord was the last thing that crossed my mind, but I bet there are some weak, pathetic morons out there that would have gone and done it anyway. I suppose if I'd suffered a serious injury then it would have been a different case, but the example illustrates what's wrong with law these days.

Seems rather stupid really, I can understand why some people like Policemen and doormen might need clip on ties as there is a real risk of something trying to strangle them with the tie but these are school kids we're talking about.

I don't think this is a great idea though. The only reason I know how to tie a tie is because I spent 5 years doing it in school.

The high school I went to changed the uniform to polo shirts so no ties. I had forgot how to tie a tie when I needed one for work. A week watching a youtube clip of how to tie a windsor knot secured it in my head again.

I would be in favour of schools pushing for polo shirts as their uniform. Pupils loom stupid and untidy with ties 4" long with a giant knot.
