WTCC: World Touring Crash Championship

Ah ok didnt realise rules were different, bit silly though lol, always seems much safer the way bike races do when I have marshalled for races.

I agree, it is. It is slowly being phased out by series that use it and replaced with the 'no racing or overtaking from the moment the SC is deployed' rule, or as the americans call it, full course caution.

I think that was the leader's fault, there were waved yellow flags and SC boards. The safety car was coming out. You can't pass it. And the pit lane exit is in the same place it was the last time round.

So hes meant to fight for position untill the line, and then 100 meters later should expect to see an almost stationary safety car on the racing line on the exit of a blind corner... Yes, he should have expected the SC to be there, but not infront of him, rapidly closing the space available.

The white blend line in races is there for a reason, especially at a track like Pau that is all high speed blind corners the safteycar should be forced to use it aswell

No, when the safety car is announced, and the flags start waving, there is no overtaking allowed anywhere on the track, the leader has the role of safety car until they from up behind the real one, and then between the safety car pulling in and the start/finish line.

Remember the waved yellows across the whose track? This can also mean there are marshals on track, so he shouldn't have been going that fast.

That said the safety car's attempt to catch the leader this time round was mis-judged too.

Which is correct, for race series who adopt that rule....

WTCC isnt one of them. In WTCC when a safety car is deployed it does not apply untill you have crossed the line, therefore everyone on the track was racing for the rest of the lap up until they crossed the line, and at that point they are under safety car conditions. So no, nobody should have slowed or stopped overtaking, they were still racing untill they crossed the line, and then 2 seconds later there is an almost stationary car on the racing line.

This style of SC rule is rapidly being phased out however, pretty much for this reason, to stop people racing for the line, potentially into a dangerous situation. I would expect WTCC to look at the full course caution rule now after this, but the facts are that as the rules currently are, the drivers wer still under normal racing condition and therefore they should not have been expect to slow at all. The fault layes entirely with the SC driver.

maybe WTCC is trying to get more fans so is "making" more accidents?

For a global sport with major manufactuers and a massive weekend of racing (supported by the FIA Formula 2 Championship this year) aswell as having a grid full of veterain touring car drivers from the hay days of the BTCC, it does seem to have very few fans. Most people dont even know the WTCC exist.

I would watch it if they took away the success ballast. The closeness it brings is artificial. Your turn to win now.

90s BTCC didn't have it, but did have a whole bunch of manufacturers, and that was epic racing.

Well see, they have a choice, try to attract as many other big car makers into the series in a time when they are all jumping ship from anything they are already involved in.... or stick a few KG of weight into the cars to keep the racing close and fun to watch...

Hmm... I wonder why they went for the weight option?

As far as im concerned, its dam good fun to watch, a dam good weekend if you go see it, and the drivers are all well known names, and its been dominated by a Brit for the last few years! When at Brands last year Andy Priaux held the door open for my girlfriend and shook my hand as he left the padock hill shop after signing autographs before jumping on a golf cart to go get into his car for the second race... Its entertainment, so as long as its entertaining, I dont care how they tweak it.

i didnt know it existed untill i started watching it at brands hatch. But even then, like A1gp, BTCC, WTCC and DTM i dont watch them on tv only at the track (Brands, Snetterton and Oulton)

For me that has a lot to do with the utterly dire coverage some of those receive (not 100% live races, no decent commentators, no decent build-up) - hell I can't even watch the WRC LIVE all the time :(

exactly, its too boring to watch, nothing to do with the racing at all, just the whole service.

The coverage of the A1GP is excellent, with most live and every qualifying and race in full, and the WTCC is the same with qualifying, warm up and the race in full and all live.

They are however.... on Sky, and not on the free sports chanels either. So I dont think its the dire coverage, its just that they are on chanels that not everyone has.

So I guess if there is a problem somewhere between the leader and the line, they have to stop the entire race? What a daft way of running a race.

Yep. I dont make the rules. But I agree it is a stupid way of running things, should be a ful course caution.

But its not, and stuff like this happens.
