Why, I am happy, I am living a good life, I don't need to, it you that needs to justify the government, they are doing a job, lets not bring in the stuff the Tories did in the 80s, I seem to remember we had a recession while the Tories had power.
Because you just labelled one of my posts as "a load of crap", which is why I think you should prove it...

Ugh, i knew that Tories were certainly the most popular party atm, but if this poll is anything to go by it's by a much larger margin than i had ever anticipated.

History repeats itself :(

Look at the state of the country in the 1970s - it took the Conservatives to make some unpopular decisions to bring the country back on track

When maggie got in there was only 500,000 unemployed after a few years
because of the stupid things she did 5,000,000 unemployed.

Oh and how about the oil in the north sea? did maggie give the UK
cheap petrol? oh no you cant do that she sold it to pay for all the unemployed
she made the years before.

And looking at your sig you was still in nappies!
you must have googled it all WRONG... KIDS ha

Perhaps your age is warping your memory ;)

At the peak, the highest unemployment has been between 1970 and 2008 is 3.2m. That figure is from the Statistics office (statistics.gov.uk). Granted, the country and the rest of Europe was in a poor state. The year Maggie left, unemployment went from 3.2m to < 2m. It then went back up to 3m, briefly, and then started piling down under Major.

By the time Labour came in 1997, the Conservatives had got unemployment down to 1.7m. By 2003, Labour increased it back up to 1.5. At the start of 2007, it was back up to 1.8m. How Labour managed to increase unemployment by so much, during a boom period, is beyond me.

The only reason why the unemployment figure will reach just 2m in this country is because of the government overhiring by 100,000s in the civil service - bloating it, and mortgaging our futures, just to improve their statistics.

Petrol prices in this country were governed by market prices... as they are today.

Get your figures right...you'd think Brown would bring up 5 million on the dole if that was the figure, but no, we are actually likely to hit around 3 million unemployed within the next 12 months which was the same as the tories reached in the 80's, the difference being our economy was strong enough to bounce out of it then as we experienced a much shallower recession, we might not be so fortunate this time. And the figures have been fudged so much that today's unemployment figures are nowhere near the real total of economically inactive people.

Only 2 million unemployed now with a bigger population, lets not forget that the coal mines and towns where nuked from orbit by the tories all because they would not stand down and we acutally import coal now and their is talk of reopening the coal mines.

The Statistics office has no interest in 'keeping numbers down', I believe the numbers from the Stats office, rather than your biased observation and extrapolations (because, by the sounds of it, you had a hard time).

Or if that is not the case, tell me how you managed to count a further 2 million, unaccounted for by the Stats office?

If coal mines were profitable, they'd still be in operation. But they're not, especially now due to things like minimum wages.

It is a pretty simple thing to understand, really. The market rule: if it is profitable, it will be done. If it is not profitable, it won't be done and will shut down.

Or do you, for some weird reason, want to pay more for your electricity and coal, by blocking imports and having it mined here?

Any proof to back this up?

Umm.. whaat?

Its not a biased observation I WENT THROUGH IT omg your in denial.
So how did you count 2m people unemployed, that the Stats office didn't manage to? How did you collect this information?

I am not in denial, I am just sensible and critically thinking.

Yes ME not a google page living proof.

I worked at the time at the only British Steel part of the company making money.
What did maggie do? CLOSED IT and sold the then high tech machinery
to Germany. Then 2 years later we bought our steel off them.

You're still dodging my question.. how did you count 2m extra unemployed people, that the stats office managed to miss?

Crikey, this reminds me of trying to talk to my old codger granddad, set in his ways etc etc :D

I come from a mining area, from a mining family. They were closed down because most of the mines were not profitable and rather than accepting a phased closure and concentrating on the more profitable pits, Scargill and the NUM tried to test Thatcher and see who had the biggest ********...they lost.

Thatcher came in to power facing the worst economic situation in peacetime since WW2 and she made some tough but necessary choices, just as Cameron will have to make after the next election, hopefully he won't get as villified as she was for doing the right thing.

Its simples really.

Look at all the single mothers do they come under the JSA?
NO they come under another benefit so they DONT show up on the unemployment list.

You hear them say on the news
" The number of people caliming JSA is down "
true because they move them to another benefit.

Reading the BNP's website, I find myself wishing the mainstream parties would adopt the same stance on Transport and Education. I don't recall the Tories mentioning scrapping speed cameras or raising motorway speed limits :)

Not a lot of Northern Ireland parties listed, but that's fair enough, we have pretty much ran out of initials to give all the parites we got, we got the whole alphabet covered :p
