Well, here goes.
I have been looking for a new job, one mainly it focused as it pays more and i also in carfiff so i dont have to comute for 2 hours each day.
So up pops john lewis system support technican, so i applied for it an got through.
I went to the inter view, i happened to be the youngest person their, and the only one their who had happend to actually bulit his own rigs in the past and has worked with operating systems out side of windows.
The first "assesment" was to build a sodding lego house! I myself cannot see any relative simeralities to building a lego house and keeping a pc network running, but i may have missed a part in advance pc maintance...
So i built the sodding house as a exact copy of the model they had from memory, and shared the idea's on how to construct it with the rest of the group.
So the next "assesment" Is to chose 5 words that mean the most to the customer, Rember this is a technical systems support role with limited or no customer interaction. So i did this yet again and shared and debate which one would be the correct five.

Then out of the blue sorry we no longer need you for this postiton, instead they hire the 3 old guys and a girl who didnt even know whatrole she was applying for.
Every time i try to improve my life i seem to get ****ed by some one or something. I could easly do that role it was simliar money for less hours and a 40 minute commute.

Its them daft team interviews, I went to one for Waitrose (which is the same group as John Lewis)

Absolute rubbish mate, I did all the team exercises, came up with some good ideas as part of my team and I didnt get through, I was smartly dressed I did take it seriously, out of the 15 or so that were there I think there was 3 that looked the part and took it serious, the others were fresh from school or foreign.

Brilliant.

I've had a group interview for Tesco too, they are just cheese personified

I wouldn't want to work for John lewis anyway, there choice in store design and fitting is awful and seems to be stuck in early 90's no matter how much they claim to be upgradding and redecorating......that's what a design degree does to you!

I know the feeling mate.

I've just applied for a job at the local council that I didn't get, as it happens I know someone working there and the guy that got the job is a bloody pleb. I could have done that job ten times better than he is. He was an internal applicant and it sounds like the council only advertised externally because they have too.

Of course your friend isn't biased in any way ;)

I've had the same until i found my current job

One job throughout said i was the best they interviewed and then gave the job to someone else as they made an untrue assumption about me, another was down to me and another guy and they gave it to him but couldnt say why as if it was just a lucky dip and another one went all the way through to issue my contract and then strung me along for 6 months before i gave up communicating to them :(

TBH I think customer service skills are very important within a support role, maybe they didnt mean customers in the term of people shopping but customers to the support department as in, the other employees of the company.

Quite frankly, I can see why they didn't hire you. The lego task is all about team working, not the end product; you didn't get the point and failed the test. A system support role is still customer focused, just the customer is a John Lewis employee.

Technical knowledge can be taught, soft skills like communication and team working skills are a lot harder and are valued more.

Oh and I really suggest you calm down, or you will get that suspension you asked for.

As has been mentioned above Systems Support Technician sounds like it would involve a lot of dealing with problems. While you may not be interacting with retail customers, staff using the systems you support would need to be treated as a customer would be. In this role communication skills can be more important than technical prowess. They are also harder "learn".

The interview could have been designed to explore that aspect of your psyche.

Mate, you really need to work on your spelling and grammar.

1/10 see me.

I had untreated Dyslexia as a kid, so i apologise for my rants spelling & grammer mistakes.
But i had all my writen correspondents prove read by a friend, so that wasnt the issue.
Sorry for my out burst, i feel like ****, ive applied for so many jobs and been turned down from every single one. My self confidance is at a all time low, mixed in with a job where im payed next to minimum wage for 50 + hours a week but can't leave it.

That + plus lack of a decent future = my spelling.

Knowing how to "build rigs" and using other operating systems is fine. However, for a support role, team working and problem solving are AS important as any technical knowledge.

I know far too many people in my field (software engineer) who are technically very good, but can't put themselves in the position of a customer, and therefore they are next to useless.

Remember, whatever job you end up in - you are performing a business function (enabling others to do their job, for example). The technical skills are one part of that.

Very often the case. Most civil servant jobs go internally and are only advertised externally for legal reasons. Next month you will see the persons' job who got promoted advertised.

I came to the conclusion a long time ago that you need to start at the bottom in the civl service/councils or not at all.

I love how people use the excuse of being Dyslexic instead of just saying I'm crap at spelling.

Bloody PC retards.
