MONACO Grand Prix 2009 - Race 6/17 Official GP Thread

When Heikki came to McLaren, it was on the back of an impressive rookie season at Renault where he outshone his experienced teammate (the same teammate, btw, who had outclassed Massa in 2004). I'll agree that last season Heikki was all the use of a sack of potatoes, but I don't agree he was picked to be a ragdoll in the second car.

He was still under immense pressure at Renault due to the amount of unforced errors he made. He was under the threat of being ditched in 07. His team mate was Fisi who Williams once spoke of as a driver they would have signed ages ago if they thought he was any good :D

Heiki has clearly been signed as a no 2.

You are in the vast minority with your thinking. Many, including myself, believe Michael Schumacher to be the greatest and most complete F1 driver, ever.

When ever I hear his name I think CHEAT.
I rate him below Mansel/Senna/Prost/Lewis/Alonso

Many of the recent WDC have been pricks IMO. Schumi was such a smug git, I really couldn't like him if I tried. Alonso and Hamilton are both pretty arrogant. Jenson, Rubens... Nicest guys in F1? It's about time both of them had the chance to show us what they can do, just a shame that one of them has to come 2nd this year.

I heard from someone who met the drivers that both Vettel and Kubica were really nice, and DC was grumpy and had no time for fans.

I think there is a degree of arrogrance that comes with self-belief in a great F1 driver. Schumacher probably wouldn't have been so successful if he wasn't a bit arrogant. I think people are taking it a bit too far, probably just because they were sick of seeing the same person win all the world championships and so many races. There's absolutely no denying he's one of the best, if not the best, driver to grace the ranks of F1.

See, this is the perfect example of how irritating some Hamilton fans are. How the hell can you put Hamilton in the same category as Mansell, Senna and Prost?

He's a great driver, no question - supremely talented, ambitious and ballsy. And he has the potential to become one of the all-time greats. But he isn't there yet. Another couple of titles, a few overtaking moves that get talked about a decade down the line, then you can put him in that category. Until then, I still rate Mansell, Senna and Prost an order of magnitude higher.

Couldn't have put it better. :)

A mansell or a villeneuve would have raced whoever they put in the other car. They are the drivers I admire rather than those that cherry pick a driver who will sign a no2 contract to get out of a stewart or a jordan.

Mansell's return to Williams wasn't straight forward. Mansell would only agree a return if a list of demands were met, including undisputed number one status, guarantees of support in a wide variety of areas with each guarantee in writing, and assurances from suppliers such as Renault and Elf that they would do everything necessary to help him win

That presumably will be after Mansell had been thoroughly stitched up by Prost at Ferrari and will also be the year that we saw Mansell (in a Williams) race wheel-to-wheel with Senna (in a McLaren) down the straight at 200mph and then saw Mansell give Senna a ride back to the pits on his side-pod.

Two of the most memorable moments in F1; worth every last penny I would say ;)

I was there on the 10th, everything was just about ready for the GP, amazing place.

I watched a little of the classic Monaco last night and after one of the early 80s races I think a brabham driver gives a ferrari driver a ride back.

Never see those days again.

Or not "Deploying" the safety car at the drop of a hat.

I believe him to be the most complete driver in F1 as well, the most complete ****. I will never know how good he actually was because he always had 3rd string team mates.

Would love to have seen JB there with MS, seeing as he really would have pushed him to his limits.....minimal limits :D:D

M Shui, N Mansell, A Prost, A Senna, L Hamilton, F Alonso (with regret I may add - Apprentice style) - some who I actually watched race - are in a totally different league. Its not enough to try and compare LH with JB, because LH is driving a dog of a car, similar probably to the car JB was driving last year, yet he is getting results...enough said!

Well except for once (disastrously) in 1973 (IIRC), there was no safety car in F1 at all untill 1993. Then there was a awful lot of people saying it should not be there at all. The use of the safety car is (in a lot of peoples views) one of the main causes of Ayrton Senna's death.

because senna never ramed anyone off for a championship

Yes but (prost I think) rammed him off to win the chamionship
he was just getting his own back :)

But I will say this for Senna at the pre race interview he did say he was going all
out for the first corner no matter what happens.

Was it hakkinen?

possibly i think it was around the schumacher vs hakkinen era, google search suggests he gave alesi a lift in 95 aswell. but the one im thinking of was some time after 98
