is eating food before you pay for it in supermarkets stealing?

If you can buy loose grapes, pick a small one and take it to the till.

It will weigh so little that it won't register on the machine.

They should let you have it for free.

Repeat until you have a whole bunch of (free) grapes!

May also with small potatos... ;)

Dunno what shops you shop in (Aldi perhaps? :D) but all the big chains machines can detect even the lightest of weights - proven by the fact that my suit jacket often catches the base and causes the machine to have a hissy fit asking for assistance because it thinks I'm trying to weigh something.

A) I'm pretty sure it would be illegal.
B) What if you find out you left your wallet behind, or your GF took the cash out (and you have no card), or your bank card didn't work.
C) It is a disgusting childish habit
D) You are not allowed to eat in most shops anyway.
E) Have the patience to wait for the food to be paid for!

It's just common behaviour.

"What I ain't doing nuffing wrong if I'm gonna pay for it"

Sort of people that play their music out loud on their phones tbh.

Maybe this is a southern fairy behaviour mostly?

Almost never seen anyone doing this oop North, apart from the odd kit with some sweets but they're usually not the same as the ones that the shop sells anyway - and I've certainly not seen any signs requesting you to pay for your food before eating it!

I would say its bad behavious really, as its far easier to secrete a wrapper somewhere than an item - and you can claim you already had the empty wrapper in your pocket when/if challenged.

Just buy something, get a receipt, then eat it if you're too hungry to shop properly.

^^ That's what I did...

I went to Tesco for a major weekly shop after work. I'd not had time for lunch at and was seriously hungry; however - knowing that I just put anything that looks remotely nice in my trolley when I go shopping when I'm hungry, I purchased a sandwich and crisps before I started the shop. I ate it outside, then went in to start my shopping.

Doing that probably saved me £20 or so on crap that would have just ended up in my trolley because it looked nice.

My dad when he went through his raw meat stage used to just eat raw mince while walking round Tesco out the packet, then paid for it at the till

I used to be so embarrased and would just walk off and not be seen with him, was disgusting and embarrasing all in one

Thankfully he's grown out of that

Your dad did what??

It drives me mad when I'm working. I'm constantly finding empty boxes and bags from the hot food/deli/bakery lying around on shelves.

So much so that, when I'm serving, if I catch on to people eating things straight away, I feed loads of labels through and make it a bugger to open. :D There's a few people I refuse to serve cause I know them, have had a few removed by security too.

But at the same time I don't see an issue if a baby wants a gingerbread man there and then, but only if they're buying more than one. And never to chav families, call it discrimination, but it's always them.

The other ones that annoy me are the rude knobbers who put their hand out over the counter when you're still packing it/putting it through the till. There's no need, just have a little patience.

That and people who pick up things out of fridge and dump them on a shelf, it has to be disposed.

This was a while back I got my free grape, I guess the machines have improved then, perhaps they cottoned on to my loophole! ;)

i do it all the time , but i always pay for it

i eat a sandwhich whilst walking around (if im hungry)

and then put the empty sandwich box on the til to pay for it..

always get a strange look from the checkout girls.

That has nothing to do with the empty sandwich box and you know it :p

I think its just a lack of manners :p

True, but like I said, I never really stopped and thought about it enough to let it bother me.

But each to their own.

There were far more irritating things that went on in the shop which irritated me more, such as leaving your trolley at an angle in the middle of the aisle, totally obstructing it for everyone else whilst browsing elsewhere.

These people would usually find their trolleys moved several aisles down, with a few additional shopping items as a form of punishment (entertainment).

Or similarly, having a conversation with the Jones's and their entire family in the middle of the centre aisle, trolleys and all.

These things are far more irritating and directly affect other people in the supermarket other than staff and thus, someone munching a sandwich never really bothered me.

as above really..

if it's stuff that is sold by weight, then yes, obviously
otherwise, no. but it's really ***** :p

i'll only do it with a baguette or something as i'll take a bit off the top
or if i'm really thirsty and there's a massive queue then i'll open a bottle of water.

having a sandwich or chocolates is just stupid. you shouldn't eat it before you've paid for it.

I would think it's technically theft because you are taking and consuming before a trade or permission has taken place although I think most supermarket workers will turn a blind eye if you pay for everything to save hassle

It's not something I would do but it doesn't bother me if others do it

Exactly. But apparently some people around here think it's snobby to have manners these days. I expect their chavvy parents let them eat sweets on the way round the supermarket when they were children so they find it socially acceptable as adults. :D

i think the oposite is probably more true around here.

to snobby to eat a sweet or a grape as your do your shopping , sandwiches , cans of pop etc is just taking the pee though
