Decided to probably wait and see if Nvidia drop prices. Really want the card below, out of stock. So so tempted by the 4890 at £165.

Surely nvidia crads are taking a hammering in sales with these 4890 prices.

Zotac GeForce GTX 275 AMP! Edition 896MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

no its not, and whilst it has cuda/physx it doesnt have DX10.1, the cards are more less an exact match for each other, remove NVidia fanboism

More of this please. Each user has its own requirements. For example, you might want to fold and therefore use CUDA. Or use DX10.1 in a game. Fanboism is pathetic :(

95thrifles you tell another poster about fanboism but if anyone sounds like a fan boy in the thread its you

yes but most 4890's incl the cheapest asus are OC'd by default, and as with this one clocked higher than the one on test

Yes but the GTX 275 OC's very nicely aswell. The GTX 275 is the faster card (by a small margin) but then the 4890 is £20-£30 cheaper (depending on brand). An arguement could be placed for buying either to be honest.

I think the whole "OC" cards idea is a marketing point. They could OC the card and sell it without mentioning OC. It is a matter of breaking up the same product into 10 different price points so that people feel they are "buying value". I am sure if the GTX 275 was easy to OC "beyond imagination" companies would sell those golden chips with premium and not dead cheap. Most probably the "cheapo" models will not overclock and if they do is random.

In my case, a 4890 with a waterblock (same price as nvidia in the end) has 0 noise and can hit 1Ghz. For others it might be a different story. Both cards offer the same/similar performance and is up to the SPECIFIC requirements of the SPECIFIC user IMO.

Theses are the first ATI cards Ive had, always had NVidia in the past myself, but there seems to be an awful lot of ATI bashing going on in these forums lately, Im just trying to stick up for the little guy. OK the 275 is marginally faster than the 4890, however imo not worth the difference in cost. Im fed up of people quoting cuda and physx as the be all and end all just because ATI dont have them, when ATI has DX10.1 which is arguably much better than either.
Anyway this is off topic, NVidia appear to have reduced their 260 prices in reponse to ATI's lower product costs, therefore anyone who prefers NVidia over ATI has the choice, get a 260 with lower performance and slightly lower cost, or a 275 with marginally better performance at an increased cost. Basically I dont see 275 prices coming down anytime soon

I can't see anyone bashing ATI in this thread.

Actually CUDA is quite useful, I could care less about PhysX but lets not get into that. DX10.1 is clearly just a big fat waste of time though.

With the 4890 beating the vastly overpriced 285 in quite a few tests you do have to wonder what Nvidia are thinking with their current pricing. I love having them fighting it out as it only makes things better for us the consumer.

Would like a new Nvidia card but just don't think I can justify buying anything other than a 4890 for current price vs. performance.

Thats why i went 4890 this round for my upgrade. I could justiy pay extra than getting a 260 but couldn't justiy getting a 275. I think overall the 275 is faster by a couple of frames. Anyways its new ground first ati card

I really think you should consider a gtx 260, they are really getting very cheap atm, i use an xfx 260 xt and had no problem getting the core to 700, yes the 275 has more shaders but really (you are right in thinking the perfomance difference is not worth the extra cash).

Driverheaven reviewed the asus gtx260 matrix and it was outperforming the 275 in their benchmarks. Yes you could oc the 275 but tbh who knows how long you might be waiting.

Otherwise have a look on 'that' auction site, I'm sure Iread a thread here where someone picked up a 275 for £130,
