Nvidia prices

I really think you should consider a gtx 260, they are really getting very cheap atm, i use an xfx 260 xt and had no problem getting the core to 700, yes the 275 has more shaders but really (you are right in thinking the perfomance difference is not worth the extra cash).

Driverheaven reviewed the asus gtx260 matrix and it was outperforming the 275 in their benchmarks. Yes you could oc the 275 but tbh who knows how long you might be waiting.

Otherwise have a look on 'that' auction site, I'm sure Iread a thread here where someone picked up a 275 for £130,

275 seems to have better minium frames tho: http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=778&pageid=11, http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=778&pageid=7 ,

+ this card doesnt come pre-overclocked. You still have to overclock it which you can do with the gtx 275 and get very good results. Seems a bit of a pointless arguement really.

yes it is a superior card, but guessing when prices will be cut is hard. I wanted a 275 or 80/5 but when you look at benches, they really grind you out for just a handful of frames that can be made up with oc'ing.

Also I have no experience awith gtx275/80/85 but 260 runs very very cool, I remember when I got my 4870 x2, I saw the temps hitting 88 and started sweating (literally as well lol)

The point of my arguement is that (as the op believes also) the price difference is too much, who knows how long it will take before prices come down. The gtx285 price has recently dropped, so perhaps it will, but what if in a month time it hasnt?

saying you can make up the frames by overclocking is a bit of a moot point as you can overclock the card above to be even faster again. If you look at that driverheaven link you can see the stock gtx 275 offers quite a nice frame boost over a stock clock 260 :) in both min and avg frames.

But if you compare the 4870 to the 260 216 as below from Xbit, you can see it outperforms the Nvidia offering and is a fair bit cheaper again without needing to OC.

yes but I am not just talking about performance

this thread is foremost about price

Ok I actually just read op lol

yeah go for 4890 it's crazy performer at good price

there is sth about ATI cards that turns their buyers into hardcore fanboys that will defend ati for life. Well at least now i know that i'm immune to it :D .

Actually CUDA is quite useful, I could care less about PhysX but lets not get into that. DX10.1 is clearly just a big fat waste of time though.

DX10.1 was made to be a waste of time for the actions of Nvidia though. Vantage and Assassins Creed are two of which we know about. Nvidia were lazy in implementing this due to not going through the painful transition like ATI done (R600 flop *I was a victim :(). Even the 3800 series had the same problems but ATI addressed this with close to 50% power efficiency plus nearly half of the price to redeem themselves for the failure. Give them time and what did they do?. Ta-da!!! 4800 series :).

I do agree with you though. Cuda you can do things with. Physx I had with my 8800GTX and used it zero amount of times. DX10.1 I seen it in Assassins Creed but one game wasn't worth it to me. It's just when you add that Nvidia didn't want to change their architecture hence why DX10.1 wasn't used by Nvidia that it makes the useless DX10.1 a cloudy area to debate about. If Nvidia implemented this then Vantage would be different and how many games would be using this technology also?. Crystal ball time :D.

By immune you mean your an Nvidia fanboy right? or do you just pop into every graphics card thread to bash ATI with zero proof for kicks?

Anyway, personaly I don't see Nvidia's prices dropping any time soon, at least until nearer the time they bring out the 300 series.

As people have said and shown, the differance between the 275 and 4890 is about ~5 fps maximum and for a good £40 more for the 275. This for me is reason enough to go with the 4890.

The 4890, basically a tweaked and overclocked 4870, does improve performance over the 4870 1GB and puts up good competition for the GTX 275. On a pure performance level the 4890 and GTX 275 trade blows at different resolutions. The 4890 tends to look better at lower resolutions while the GTX 275 is more competitive at high resolutions. At 1680 x 1050 and 1920 x 1200 the 4890 is nearly undefeated. At 2560 x 1600, it seems to be pretty much a wash between the two cards.

Seems good enough to me, just go for the cheapest card. You're not likely to notice a difference.

I don't believe CUDA, PhysX, or Dx10.1 are reasons to choose one card over another. Just go for what gives you the best bang for your buck. You'd be mad to do anything else.

Oh, and guys, there are a lot of "nVidiots" on these forums. What they do is go on the wind-up, just enough to provoke a reaction but not enough to get a ban for it. Best thing to do is not feed them, otherwise they're going to hang around and do it more, like a bad STD.

£18 actually...

In my case, a 4890 with a waterblock (same price as nvidia in the end) has 0 noise and can hit 1Ghz. For others it might be a different story. Both cards offer the same/similar performance and is up to the SPECIFIC requirements of the SPECIFIC user IMO.

waterblock + 1ghz daily clock 4tw

He's butthurt about his X2 "not working" when it's likely his own fault.

IMO his sig should be edited because it's just trolling tbh.

you could change that nVidiots to ATIdiots and it would be just as true - the only difference is most of the nVidia fan boys are atleast honest about it whereas the ATI ones act like they are neutral when they are nothing of the sort - its actually quite amusing.

Oookay then this place doesnt sound like spotty people with braces, bad hair and too much time on their hands arguing about trains does it.

are you sure yours is working properly? i wouldnt be. a quick look at the members market you'll find people selling their 4870x2 they just bought.

Lets remember we're all consumers so we are all on the same side, without either ATI or Nvidia we'd all be getting shafted royally and be paying through the nose.

I do think Nvidia are way out of touch with this generation of cards right now, not that they are bad cards but the pricing just doesn't make much sense to me personally.

The 260's are meant to be pretty quiet which is a def. plus for me and a big reason I was thinking of purchasing one and although I'm not entirely sold on PhysX the extra effects in Mirror's Edge do look sweet, just be nice if we could get a cross-card standard agreed for everyones benefit.

i don't think the pricing is too bad. The 260 is very cheap, and the 275 is only £18 or so more here than the 4890 and it is the slightly(very slightly) faster card. The 285 does seem a little out of place though especially as the 275 and 4890 come very very close.

I know this isn't directed at me but after we've been in discussion today I want to reply to you.

Rroff, in another forum thread today you are telling people of something I've never heard of before which left Nvidia in the better light. I also told you that through my PC gaming I've spent more time with ATI but after the 8800GTX that I would happily use both. Then you say that people act nothing like that in reality when just a few hours ago I gave you a prime example through me?. Come on with your statement.

You claimed that 8xAA on ATI cards is equal to 4xAA on Nvidia cards. Only in the last week I've been testing the 4870 and 8800GTX on my system, two 4870s crossfired on a DFI X48 with E6850 @ 3.5Ghz 4gb of DDR2 to the GTX 280 and an i7 @ 4Ghz, 6GB DDR3 2x 4870s to the GTX 295 with no replication of said problem at all. I've seen the AA not work at all on other systems until a proper clean out has happened but when it was working it was just as sharp as Nvidia 4xAA.

If 4xAA on ATI was giving you more jaggies than 4xAA on Nvidia then I'm doubtful that both cards were at the same level. That to me sounds like 2xAA for ATI and 4xAA on Nvidia which would also be apparent if you had Nvidia on 2xAA and the ATI card on 4xAA.

I was messing about with my 4870 and 8800GTX before 8.12 drivers and never seen this problem. I still have my 8800GTX now. I'll be testing it tomorrow as I'm selling it. I might even use 8.10s to 8.12s on a 2048x1536 resolution and host the pics on imageshack to let you see for yourself.

Nvidia/ATI = Give me any of them as long as they cost about the same for about the same performance. If it runs your games happily then I don't understand the problem that people have with having one or the other.
