Off on our Nurburgring trip tomorrow

10mins 15seconds in a 1.8 astra is respectable to you? Its either phoenominal or lies :p

Lol, its was an ok time for me to get round, although I did get held up in a few sections and my brakes were totalled by that point  :p

Sorry to rain on your parade on the campsite, but it was €26 per night per person when I went in September.

Hmm will check with my mate whos arranged the trip, but I know the last 2 trips its worked out between 10 - 15 euros each per night. Maybes you hit it during an event or holiday weekend? Either way if thats what it is its no big deal, the campings always been a good laugh.

Its a good trip but i wouldn't want to camp, for the cost of a hotel i just don't see the point of putting up with being in a field without power etc.

I find the drive over and the roads around the Nurburgring lots of fun.

Clearly its the car you take or cars you go with that make the difference

The camping is half the fun, though I like camping in this country so if it's not your thing then yeah hotels can also be had fairly cheap. Oh and you always pitch beside the power points, and the shower and toilet block, along with the bar, is only a few mins walk from where we pitch.

Yeh the roads around the 'Ring are great fun if you can get a clear run.

Got to disagree with you a little on your last point tho. Like I said I've been twice in my old astra and that was far from a great car but the trips were still great fun and enough to get me hooked, tho the flying lap on the back of my mates RSV Mille was almost enough to put me off! :p

Not really. Yes, you'll find the ring is excluded on uk insurance policies. Therefore you will be driving effectively uninsured for comprehensive cover. But it doesn't mean you are driving illegally. under my understanding you are still basically covered third party.

Which is illegal, as its a public road..

My insurance specifically states it does not provide cover at the Nurburgring because despite being a public road they class it as a circuit.

My point was that its illegal to drive on a public road in Germany without valid insurance against third party risks :)

And it's especially foolish to do so on a road where your chance of crashing into somebodies 911 GT2 is rather higher than normal

I went round as a passenger in brother's E46 M3. Was good fun, I'd like to try it myself, didn't want to risk dying on the bike at that time though so left it at the hotel!

One thing I keep thinking about though is that it's so huge, it'll take a long time to learn the thing. Is it not more rewarding going round a 'traditional' track where you stand more chance of remembering it all? Mind you, I remember every single corner of some Welsh roads so... I have been down those a hell of a lot though... hohum

What sort of wear and tear does a week at the ring do to a car? I'm guessing a few sets of tyres would be needed, can youget them there?

Depends how many laps you do, tyre wear is an issue unless you do over 50 laps then i can't really see you going through a set too quickly, brake pads on the otherhand, you might see the end of a set, depends on your setup.

Pads and discs are easy to get, never needed a tyre but they seem very easy to find also.

Thats not too bad then, still gonna stick to my hotels :P

Tyres aren't too bad, I stuck a full set of Vredestein Ultracs on the astra a month or 2 before going over last year and 14 months on and there's still about half the tread left on them! Brakes can take a beating, I usually change the fluid before and after the trip myself, and pads as and when they need done.

The first time I went there was a mobile tyre fitting van in the car park so parts are available if needed.

This is true, its classed as a derestricted toll road and insurance is a big grey area. Nowhere in my policy does it state it excludes the Nurburgring or unrestricted toll roads, only the usual track days, time trials and so on. From the research I've done you are technically covered 3rd party, but I just drive as if I'm not covered and stay well clear from the expensive toys on show! Its actually not that hard to stay out of peoples way, the tracks fairly wide and the fast boys are past you before you have a chance to hit them :p

Anyways I dont intend on finding out! :p

who are you insured with?

i got 8 or 10 laps in last summer. my front tyres were lightly feathered. the discs were blue. i saw oil temp get up to 122* and water temp went over 100* after three consecutive laps. mpg dropped to 20 mpg lol

that was the extent of the toll taken on my car

How easy is it go do something like this, is it with a club you're a member of or something?

Hopefully will be posting similar end of this year or beginning of next

Pretty easy, you just turn up at the campsite/hotel and then turn up at the track (ensuring that it's actually open to the public when you do go).

Sorry to rain on your parade on the campsite, but it was €26 per night per person when I went in September. It makes it very expensive for a campsite bearing in mind some of the B&Bs can be had for circa €30-35. We were predicting €10 too and were quite disappointed when we arrived. On a more positive note, I hope you have a great time. I'm close to being able to book a trip myself fairly soon, though I'm hoping that the Exchange rate will become more favourable! You should have masses of fun in the new car compared with the Astra. Looking forward to pics!

Christ almighty that's gone up some since I went in 2007!

Also, be very wary of fluid leaks. One of my mates has just had a £10k payout (covering his bike) after it was written off by a coolant leak from an Irish 911 GT3.

Luckily the GT3 driver was insured as there were 6 other vehicles which crashed as a result of the coolant spill - all being paid off by insurance. The Nurburgring owners also want thousands off him in lost revenue after the track was closed for a bank holiday afternoon as a result of the crash.
