**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

I think someone like Valencia is an absolute must now. As much as Rooney can do a job on the left, he is being wasted there and I'm sick of that left side not being addressed and one of our best players being asked to play out of position. If Ferguson has no faith in Nani any longer or even asking Park to play there, then we need a left winger who will fit in seamlessly and immediately. That way we can start playing to player's strengths rather than covering weaknesses.

certainly agree with that

IF Ronaldo stays (and Im still not convinced he will) he will be played centrally more , esp in Europe

As of now we really need two wide players - Park can be very good there, but some times he just disappears and he really isnt a 1st team player imo. Fergie seems to be playing Welbeck more frequently from a wide position (even though like Rooney he is really a central striker) so maybe that will be a common sight next season

Im still hoping OH makes a complete recovery - as there just arent (m)any options of similar versatile players, but hopefully either way Utd should know within the window whether he is pain free etc or not and if we need a replacement.

Torres has signed a new deal :D

He already has 4 seasons left to run and this is just an improved deal with the option of a further year but excellent news never the less.

edit: Also it has been widely reported that Rafa met with Babel's agent the other day and told him that he can start looking for a new club for Babel. Babel's agent has said today that Babel wants to stay and that he wants to meet with Rafa so who knows what's happening there.

Not quite a transfer but Rafa's overhaul of the academy has been stepped up; it's being reported that near enough the entire coaching team at the academy have had their contracts terminated (Piet Hamburg (the academy director) went a few weeks back) and it's been confirmed that Gary Ablett (reserve team manager) will be leaving the club also.

Don't want to stir up any Man Utd fans, especially not today, but in my opinion none of those players are world class, and that's not right for a team of Man Utd's quality. Schole and Giggs aren't fit to play any significant role for Man Utd anymore, Anderson isn't there yet, Fletcher is good but obviously no where near world class, Carrick is very good but I wouldn't say he's one of the world's best, Hargreaves is my pick of the bunch but you'd be naive to rely on him. I think that Man Utd's defence and attack are world class but the midfield are letting them down big time.

To think Hargreaves is better than Carrick or Fletcher is really baffling. Obviously Hargreaves has strings to his bow that neither Carrick and Fletcher have (which is why we bought him in the first place) but in terms of all round ability he doesn't match them. Not based on what I saw from him last season anyway.

Aye, but if Man Utd want to compete with Barca over the next few years they're going to need somebody to play against Xavi and Iniesta with, last night was sort of embarrassing, I don't think Xavi or Iniesta lost the ball or even came close to doing so, there was such a gulf in class.

A Fletcher or Hargreaves would have helped massively last night with that

Essien, Gerrard, Fabregas are all world class for their respective teams. Obviously, none would be available except for absolutely stupid money. :o Man Utd are missing that class/ability in their midfield.

Yet we manage to win the Premiership ahead of Chelsea (Essien), Liverpool (Gerrard) and Arsenal (Fabregas)

We might not have what is perceived to have one of the best midfielder's in the world but what we do have is more than good enough to win the highest of honours

First time ive ever thought i wouldnt mind if ronaldo went, we need a CM that can controll the game, and if ronaldo went im sure we could buy in someone to fill his boots with a better work ephic and pulls out more consistant performances, and above all doesnt winge and gets on with the game, and actualy runs back, ronaldo is NOT a full player imo like everyone says, last night fergi picked the wrong team imo, scholes should have been on from the start, anderson was just unbelievably poor, park did.....nothing.....and o'shea ? seriously

i hope this transfer window has something in store for us

Personally think Owen Hargreaves was EXACTLY what Utd missed last night (and to a lesser extent Fletcher) instead of Giggs

If OH had been able to play there would have been muscle and graft to go with the artistry / Skill of Carrick and Anderson could have played his more natural game

There is a serious doubt whether OH will come back anywhere near what he was like in his first season (where he only played 26 games due to injury) let alone completely injury free - but if he does he will be worth his weight in gold.

Barca wherent that much better last night compared to in the semii last season, but Utd where missing crucial players (and two centre backs nursing injuries)

Barca deserved it - but Utd arent as far behind as it looked last night

Spot on

Do you really believe that? I don't even think Barca were at full speed and they could have had 4+, Henry should really have finished that chance, Xavi's free kick was very close and Puyol had a glorious chance. I think Barcelona were better in every single aspect of the game and comprehensively took Man Utd apart, without their first choice team (nowhere near in fact.)

Wrong

They scored against the run of play and it turned the game, no denying they were the better team but had we got the first goal it would have been a very different game. That's not to say we'd definitely of won but the apparent gulf in class wouldn't of been present

You could say exactly the same thing about the 2nd leg at the Emirates ;).

Well apart from us being the better team that is :D, first 10 mins we were all over you though!

At a risk of repeating myself a left winger will not stop the fact that Rooney will still be played from the left in the big European games while Ronaldo is still at the club. SAF will not leave Rooney or Ronaldo out of the big games and Ronaldo will not be given the job of tracking back ergo Rooney wide Ronaldo through the middle

You're absolutely spot on and something that unfortunately was at forefront of my thoughts after last nights final whistle. Swings and Roundabouts eh :(

Was going to mention how much it resembled the game at the Emirates for me too, Arsenal were quite good for 10 minutes and looked like they'd make a great game out of it, then a goal out of the blue and the game was over

Should go for the xmas tree formation then, Rooney and Ronaldo dropping off a main striker.

Who that is would be anyone's guess. Nistelrooy would be perfect :p

You won the premiership in spite of your midfield, not because of it.

You missed out the bit about Carrick having zero ability as a holding midfielder...

Also true. He can play deeper and has a very good range of passing, in a way similarly to Alonso and Pirlo, but not as good.

He's not a DM though, which I understood him to be aiming at. Besides which, that was a very small part of what he was saying and is semantics at best.

I agree, that's why I'm not overly thrilled about the Alonso to Arsenal rumours (not that it'll happen) as he's not a true DM and not what is needed.

How do you define a true defensive midfielder though ??? One of the best DM's to play in the Prem was Claude Makalele. He was great because he used his brain and took up the spaces that attacking midfielders would run into.
