Rebuild: Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI

This is why the mi16 is so good, lots more power than the 1.9 and 1.6 revving... ideal!

Also most people who have the gti-6 engine in still prefer the mi16 as it seems to suite the 205 a lot more.

For me, it wasn't just about power delivery it was about the amount of power itself.
The 1.6 car is just so well balanced, and adding more does make it faster but slightly less enjoyable in my book.

Having been in both, I'd agree.

The trouble is finding an Mi that doesn't need a rebuild, and there's always the oil starvation worry in the back of your mind, hence the popularity of the 6 lump I reckon. The lighter weight and Jekyll and Hyde character means the Mi is probably more suited if you don't mind the extra effort or expense.

So you are not rebuilding the engine? just refitting things back onto the block?

Are these engines quite cheap to modify/tune?

Not really, no. The XU is in a pretty decent state of tune as it is, it's quite expensive to extract any real additional power out of them.

The_Dark_Side, I agree with you about the 1.6 being a better drive. I'd also disagree with Robbie G about starting with a later shell, cars built after approximately 1991 seem to be far more rot-prone than early shells.

No need to replace shells or engines - thats a nice little project and could turn into a cracking little car :)

I'd definitely agree too. That's why I went for a 1990 car, just before it all went pear shaped ;)

Top engine mount is missing, on the driver's side.

Well yeah, I knew that...more a point of why it isn't on. :p

And so it begins

You going to be about then or not? I know Vic said you'd be down in Dorset next week to see a friend, so wasn't sure what you're upto and if you can help.

5 years? :o

hope he's overfilled it with oil or something...

It still cranks...we know this because when we towed it around the house a while ago my brother left it in gear...oil and stuff everywhere. :D

pussy :p man up, and chuck a mi16 in

I am aiming to not spend anything on the car, as at the moment it's my brother's...although I do plan on buying it off him for a lot less than it's worth.

Little update...moved it into the garage ready for me to start on it tomorrow...

…I forgot to mention it has a full stainless exhaust system, and a rather meaty sound system too…

It’s also definitely been sat since mid 2004…

Now that it’s in the main garage, I could look in the boot for things like the head and other parts that aren’t on the car at the moment…

…found them, along with the sub.

I also noticed something in the passenger footwell…

…Jamex lowering kit…

...just out of shot is a 3 tonne rocket lift jack, and another 3 tonne normal jack, it's safe to say I have the space and tools. :D

I’ll not start work till tomorrow as I’ve got plenty of time.

Should have taken your BMW there when you were doing your brakes ;)

Looks good, exhaust looks Magnex style with the tailpipe supported like that.

Oh and GTI-6 engines run to ~£400 and are 167bhp...... need I say more! ;)

Looks good, get all that audio pap out of the boot, think of the weight savings. :p

Good luck getting it all done though.

If you are looking to get the car lowered you will need the rear torsion bar lowered to match, its a pretty hard thing to do if you don't have much experience with them, as they can be very seized up. Can get them done professionally for about £80 though.

I did, it's where I fitted the rears. :)

Not sure what make it is, may see if I can find a stamp somewhere on it.

I don't have £400...plus I want to get this one back on the road...then modify it. :D

Thanks. :)

For the min it'll sit on stock suspension, that set is left from a 1.6 that got scrapped...I recall it brought the 1.6 too low, the mid box had issues with bumps, this one's mid box is low enough as it is really.

Personally I'd get rid of the sound system (sell it on fleabay) and use original suspension on it.

I'd love an original GTI that had been carefully restored - wouldnt buy one thats had too much other stuff added to it though. Thats just personal taste though

As I say, all I'm doing is bringing it back to life, which will include use of the stereo, I won't sell anything from the car as it isn't mine. :)

Sometimes I wish I'd left mine completely standard. Although I've only done subtle updates and upgrades (apart from the Marmite front bumper), so most people wouldn't be able to tell.

Not sure I could live with standard height suspension though. They really look odd, and it's very rare to see them. And as for the ICE weight issue - I kept adding to my multi amp system, and eventually got tired of the performance drop so decided to go without any sounds at all. The car shed close to 100KGs when I removed it all  Most of that was from the boot, so the handling was transformed overnight!

I'd want to put a 2.0 hdi 110 bhp lump in it tbh.

they can be tuned to 155 bhp 300ft/ib + with just a remap, and will destroy a gti 6

:)

Yeah I've just stripped my rear out completely. My guess on weight saving would be in the region of 50kg+. Thats including all audio and spare wheel.

I've decided to just run a set of components in the front, all thats needed really.

Boring though, you want an engine to rev and rev that you need to work to go fast/enjoy. And you have a gearbox too, the GTI-6 one is matched to the engine power, rather than one which would be used to substaintially less power and leave you with terrible gear ratios.

Not the same just putting it in gear and going TORKSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!111oneone

And what Iaind said, dont think it would fit, esp as you would need a big FMIC and piping for that kind of power.
