SPL Season 2008/2009 thread

So the Rangers do the double with a stunning strike from wee Nacho. Credit to a very skillfull Falkirk side who pass the ball when but fail to put it in the net which is what maters in the end of the day. Off to crack open the champers again. This is getting to be a habit :D :D :D

Thought Falkirk were unlucky today not to get a goal with the possession they had, with Rangers happy to sit back and let them tire themselves out. Was a great goal from Novo though to win it.

Do Falkirk go into the Champions League qualifiers now or is it the Europa League?

None of these names tossed around really strike me with any fear or anything, I have to assume Celtic fans must be feeling a tad underwhelmed right now.

Have to say though, we have our next manager so we wont have such a search probably.

Dont really know what to make of him to be honest, on the one hand his football would be of the kind to excite the CP crowd and he appears to be confident and able to motivate a squad. He also seems quite happy/able to work with a tight budget all in all he appears to be the perfect candidate.

However its a big step from Swansea to Celtic in terms of club size and expectations.

I wouldnt be unhappy at his appointment and he is streets ahead of some of the names mentioned.

I just find it surprising how young he is....Swansea played some great football last season and it would be interesting to see how he would adapt to the pressure up here, it is something else as many have found.

Also PLG admits he got it all wrong at Rangers and was way too arrogant....

May 31 2009

FORMER Rangers boss Paul Le Guen has admitted he was a flop at Ibrox because he was too arrogant and smug.

The Frenchman, who won three straight Ligue 1 titles with Lyon, replaced Alex McLeish in the summer of 2006.

But he was to become Gers' shortest-serving manager ever after being axed the following January.

Le Guen's reign was seen as a disaster, with Rangers making their worst start to a season since 1978 and losing at home in the CIS cup to St Johnstone.

The 45-year-old was named coach at Paris St Germain but is leaving this summer as his contract is not being renewed.

Le Guen has now looked back on his SPL career and delivered a damning indictment of his time in the Ibrox hotseat.

He said: "I could have stayed longer at Rangers but I made one or two mistakes.

"I was a bit big-headed when I went there. There was an element of smugness on my part.

"I won three league titles with Lyon and had various fixed ideas in my mind.

"I told myself: 'I'm going to knock this club back into shape very quickly'.

"But I ought to have gone about things more gently and shown more patience, because it would have been worth my while to do so.

"And I am sure the reason I was not patient enough is that the Rangers job was my first one in a foreign country."

. Off to crack open the champers again. This is getting to be a habit :D :D :D

Thats mine all offically finished and i don`t think i could face another bottle. :D

All in all, a decent season after a terrible start.

All season we`ve heard how Timothy are miles ahead of us in terms of Money, Squad etc etc and how Rangers wouldn`t recover financially from the Kaunas debacle yet here were are with the two important trophies in the Cabinet and guaranteed income from the CL group stages. Not bad for a "club on it`s knees". Even on our knees we`ve proved we`re better.

Theres an age old theory that C*ltic always seem to shoot themselves in the foot, and i`m beginning to beleive it.

I`ve never looked forward more to CL qualification matches as i will this summer. :D

Perhaps Fuddie McUgglyogrely would care to comment on our excellent achievements this season. Up til now, he`s been very enthusiastic when commenting on Rangers. Perhaps we can entice him out with a bit of cheese. :D

Have to admit that would be my worry, but considering the alternatives ( mowbray/levein/mcghee ) I reckon Martinez is worth a punt.

He might need time, and this may well not be forthcoming. By my reckoning if the first old firm game went badly against us the knives could well be drawn.

I was always very fearful of PLG and i reckon given the time to get things right Rangers would have been a very different and more powerful beast under his leadership.

Simply put Rmuir, he hadn`t a clue.

Remember we lost 2-0 at home to St Johnstone under his management and signed players like Filip Sebo and Karl Svensson.

Theres an argument he inherited a team very much on the up with Lyon and couldn`t really make a mess of them as they were so far ahead.

An unmitigated disaster for Rangers and my theory was confirmed when the spineless goon could`t grow a pair for the second half of the season when he was 17 points behind.

Scottish Football never will be the playground of the rich. It will always be a second rate league and as such the only successful Old Firm managers will be those who were reared to understand what is required.

Going foreign very rarely works and now, more than ever, with the econimic restraints on both teams, a mamanger who can motivate average players is what is required.

Just look at that current Rangers team. A team of average (at best) players who could only really interest Championship quality teams yet we have a manager who is clever enough to play them effectively enough to win a league.

Even WS get some amount of abuse on the many Rangers forums, imagine what PLG got that night we lost to St Johndtone.

Ibrox or Parkhead is no place for amatuer managers looking to learn their trade.

Good point well made.

That was the big difference between Celtic and Rangers this year, Strachan seemed unable to motivate the team whereas Smith, even when it seem impossible, managed to rally the troops.

I quite agree that neither place is the ideal proving ground for the average manager. However all evidence suggests that Martinez is far from average, in fact, so far as i can gather, his major calling card is motivating a squad of underrated players to perform above their station.

I speak in hope as , not wishing to cast doubt on Mr Martinez, I think our options are limited thus far.

Hehehe McRod he's probably hiding under the rock we were all supposedly under. :D

Hows does it go Eddie Fail Fail??

Here the end peice of the same article

Le Guen also hinted he would consider managing in the SPL again. "I'm on the lokout for life experiences of the kind I had with Rangers," he said.
"I'm listening to what may be on offre and we will se what happens."

PLG for Hibs or Aberdeen??

C`mon over to my rock, hey you, we`re having a party. :D

Funny thing was, he bumped this thread when it was dead in the water. He bumped it when C*ltic where doing well and to poke some fun at us bears.

He coaxed us back, spat out his vitriol and verbal diahorrea and then disappears like Lord Lucan when he candle take some of his own medicine.

I miss him. :D

'Operation Tango' twists knife in gullible Bhoys fans

FOOTBALL can be a cruel game, but rival fans can be truly vindictive.

Take last Sunday's final day of the season in the Scottish Premier League. Celtic needed to beat Hearts at home, while hoping that Dundee United could do them a favour and stop Rangers from winning.

So, after Rangers took an early lead through Kyle Lafferty at Tannadice, Hoops fans' heads began to drop. But midway through the first half a huge roar went up around Celtic Park......it seemed that Dundee United were keeping their part of the bargain and had grabbed an equaliser.

However, it turned out to be a hoax. Apparently, some scheming Gers fans had got together and launched 'Operation Tango,' whereby they would all text their Celtic-supporting friends and associates at the same time, telling them that Dundee United had equalised.

So, when the first texts came through, word spread faster than an Irish model bagging a millionaire husband. Sadly though -- depending on who you support of course -- it soon became very clear that it was still 1-0 to Rangers.

Frankly, as hoaxes go, this one is right up there with the 'Hitler diaries' and the 'War of the Worlds.'

Naturally, Rangers fans have been milking this one and, to be fair, we can't blame them one little bit
