diesel vs petrol power

Was just about to post this in the other thread. These diesel rants are truly tiresome and juvenile. stinka is presenting a reasoned and informed support of a 205 HDi and people like 'Janesy B' are battering it down with such gems as:

A big heavy diesel will not suit a 205 GTI.

In what way? If you are talking about handling, the GTI-6 engine is heavier and a very popular and effective conversion.

I dunno, never taken a scales to any of those engines. I don't think a torquey diesel would suit the car, half the fun is having the valves dancing on the bonnet and the noise.

Nice tractor

A 155bhp diesel engine, unless it's in a tiny light car is never going to be extremely fast. It may feel that way, but ... it isn't.

A 205 is a tiny light car. And it is fast.

In small cars diesels are a waste of time

BS.

Why on earth would you want a diesel over a petrol?
Wow, 220bhp in a 205 makes the car go fast shocker

I don't know what point your making with this?

No one is debating what power you can get to with them, they are stating that they don't suite these sorts of cars and are generally not as much fun as a nice revvy engine.

oil burning characterless piece of pap.

I like a well informed petrol vs. diesel debate but the above comments, are just pathetic. When will you realise that 'fun' is subjective and changes from person to person? It really is laughable the irrational anti-diesel sentiments that exist on this forum. I would bet that most of you have formed opinions from reading other posts by other mis-informed anti diesel goons such as [TW]Fox, rather than driving fast diesels for yourself and then deciding whether or not it 'suits the car'.

It's not as simple as 'diesels are heavier than petrols and therefore any diesel engine will turn a 205 from a go-kart into a train'.

I have driven 205 HDis having owned a 1.6 GTi petrol and met up with other owners, and let me tell you it was fast as hell and bloody good fun.

At last, someone that actually has some hair on their chin and is of the legal age to drive ... :D

joking apart, i'm glad you know where i'm coming from ;)

This thread is very fitting for myself. I own a 1997 306 gti-6 (167bhp) and my friend owns a 2001 306 HDI remapped to 150bhp with a front mount. After racing him a fair few times I can conclude that its bloody quick! BUT not as quick as the 6. He is almost exactly the same from 0-60 but then starts to run out of poke very fast and my taller gearing allows me to stride ahead. Hope this helps

I must say I've never read about, or heard about, an HDI conversion into a 205. It does sound rather counter-productive

Doesn't say it's 110bhp though? The 1.6 HDI is 110, the 2.0 is 90

only difference between that and the 110 bhp is a fmic, easy to fit

Great. Still can't see the appeal of a stinky rattly chugging diesel engine over the sound of a nice high revving petrol though :(

well there you go folks, its close as, and in a 206, its even closer

Well thats just dandy, but I think what most of us are trying to say is that, no matter how great diesel engines are, why spoil the whole character of the car with one. They were designed to be worked hard and hustled along, why spoil that.

I'm not denying how good modern diesels can be, I've driven some of them, but it would be just about the last thing I would put near that 205.

Great so spend an equal amount on the gti-6 as the HDI owner has done, and then see were we are?

Will a derv ever make this noise?

I'd tolerate one as a daily driver if it made economic sense, but I'd need a second car for hoonage.

it doesnt half stink when im behind it also lol plumes of smoke. Like I said its pretty damn quick for a diesel but on the back roads all his TORKS just makes him understeer round the corner, also he can never get a good launch because it just spins the wheels as it hits peak power at like 2000rmp

Yeh, imagine how much worse that would be in a 205. Also I'd be worried about getting black flagged at track days for all the smoke :p

Was he really keeping up with your GTI-6 being properly nailed through the gears? I can imagine the derv having plenty of torque for midrange grunt vs the GTI6 perhaps, but I'm surprised it's as fast from a standing start. Gearing, revs, etc etc

I agree with all of your points mate. Having owned a diesel as my first car and driven my mates reasonably quick diesel I must say it just doesnt compare to the thrill of taking a petrol to the red line and hitting the second cam

And as i was saying, when you know how to make the diesel power work, change correctly to keep it on boost, it is imo, every bit as involving, if not better than, a revey twin cam petrol lump

maybe its because i hace spent 15 years driving and tuning n/a & turbo petrols, so its a novelty, but i am hooked for now, and for me i cant see me going back
