diesel vs petrol power

Was he really keeping up with your GTI-6 being properly nailed through the gears? I can imagine the derv having plenty of torque for midrange grunt vs the GTI6 perhaps, but I'm surprised it's as fast from a standing start. Gearing, revs, etc etc

yeah its strongest from launch, he hits peak boost at like 10mph, then again at like 30mph and again at 50mph because of the short gears; its like being hit in the face constantly by a bat lol. It isnt untill im well into 2nd at 50mph ish where i really start to pull away, and quite quickly too

What part did you fail to grasp, Mark?

I'm not Mark but Iwould think he "failed to grasp" this part:

"I have driven 205 HDis having owned a 1.6 GTi petrol and met up with other owners, and let me tell you it was fast as hell and bloody good fun."

That sentence doesn't really make any sense.... "I have driven 205 HDis" (Multiple examples of 205 HDi? What's a 205 HDi? Or do you mean 205 different HDi cars? If so that's a very specific number)
You then say "it" was fast as hell indicating a singular so you must mean one 205 HDis, whatever one of those is

It just doesn't read properly.

All the time he's having to change gear while you just redline it in 1st and 2nd? Hmm :p

I'm not being rude btw, it's a fair discussion, I just find it curious that's all :p

And as i was saying, when you know how to make the diesel power work, change correctly to keep it on boost, it is imo, every bit as involving, if not better than, a revey twin cam petrol lump
Nah, can't agree.

maybe its because i hace spent 15 years driving and tuning n/a & turbo petrols, so its a novelty, but i am hooked for now, and for me i cant see me going back
You kids make me laugh.... :)

I've driven many many diesels, both non turbo, turbo and common rail, v6s and I agree mondern diesels are phenomenal. However, other than offering easy driving they don't "feel" exciting to drive, a big wallop of torque and then you have to start again. I find the power delivery of petrol, both NA and FI and big bloc v8s far far more appealing and the power delivery far more useable.

The car/chassis is fun and a good chassis with a good diesel will be good, but it won't be as fulfilling as a petrol car in terms of flexibility and driveability purely down to how diesel behaves.

Yeah, diesel makes sense when you do mile upon mile on the motorway but I find a good petrol engine more enjoyable to drive when giving it some :)
I find it more enjoyable to drive when not giving it some, either. Smoother, quieter, less NVH.

Obviously if we're comparing a 1.2 Corsa to a BMW 335D things change, but you get the idea.

I know it seems odd but I dont hit my real power untill the 2nd cam which is around 4000rmp@25mph ISH where as hes already hit his power at 2000rmp@10mph. So his power is available earlier than mine. But as I said its also his downfall as it runs out of gears/rmp far too quick because he's only for 5 as opposed to my 6 and his are so damn short.

A 205 HDi, "fast as hell" ? Please explain.

My comment about wanting a petrol over diesel was aimed at a cheap french hot hatch. I'm sorry but to the majority of people a sporty hot hatch should not have a diesel engine.

Also, we should compare like with like. TDi's Vs Turbo petrol equivalents, unmodified.

I must note that I am not saying diesels cannot be powerfull, nor that are they poor engines.

Give me your GTI-6 any day. I don't care if his dieseasel is faster.

lol cheers, but hes not faster :D he's just kinda close to 60. He defends it to the death though, and all this mpg talk it bs because he's lucky to see 30mpg since the remap.

I've owned mostly petrol cars but i really enjoy my 1.9 TDI Ibiza FR, decent motor way cruiser and quite fun around town with a punchy in gear accleration. VERY BRIEFLY did 131mph according the GPS one night going to Hertfordshire at 3AM on a Sunday morning with clear visibilty for miles (mpg i meant sorry :p) with relative ease. Not the quickest car i've owned but its quicker than the majority of other traffic and not noisy at all (bloody 17" low profile tires make more noise than the engine)

agreed on fuel economy :( :p

does he not beat you in the 70-90 stakes. like say overtaking from a constant 70 mph

Why can't people argue this properly? It's like being in graphics cards.

People like me are actually interested in choosing between the two, and all we get is "Diesel smells" "Diesels are slow" "Diesels sound crap" and other similar remarks.

Honestly, and some of you call yourselves car enthusiasts.

Pardon?

I have one car. And it has to make me smile if I want to, that involves revving past 6 and sounding sweet. Diesels don't sound good is a relevant point for me.

Not noisy compared to what? A tractor?

It does make me laugh when you hear diesel owners go on about how how 'smooth' and 'quiet' they think they're engines are.

Drive a 330i or a Lexus LS430. That's smooth and quiet.
