diesel vs petrol power

I have a diesel and there are some aspects which I enjoy. It's easy to drive, fuel economy is pretty decent and pulls well enough for me. I do however hate the noise of the engine and the limited amount of revs. My next car will be a petrol, as most of the benefits of a diesel can be easily matched from a petrol, without the drawbacks.

the problem with the price-based argument is that the petrols have, and always will be, one step ahead. i mean the 530d had the best diesel engine in the world at the time, but it still was nowhere near as good as the petrol 'equivalent'.

even now, the bmw diesels are producing silly figures, but the petrols are even more powerful than anyone could have imagines 10 years ago.
the fact that diesels cost more than their equivalent petrols (in the uk at least), makes it more annoying

The current 530d has 235bhp and 500nm of torque and does 0-60 in 6.8s(m&a). The current 530i has 272bhp and 320nm of torque and does 0-60 in 6.3(m),6.5(a) now factor in the 530d is torque limited in both first and second and the performance once rolling will be very similar with the 530d having a combined mpg figure of +20% more than the petrol. The extra cost of the diesel over the petrol is only £360 which on a £40k car is nothing. You cant really say the diesel is nowhere near as good as the petrol equivalent.

That said the diesel does loose out in the sound stakes and if you want to be on the boil with a gearstick but then is the 5 series the right car for that anyway, most of them sold are autos and the diesels are perfectly suited to auto boxes with lots of torque available from very low rpms.

I cant really be bothered reading this whole thread because it seems to be repeating itself and getting a bit tedious.

At the end of the day, its personal taste. Some people prefer the way diesels drive, myself included. I dont want to drive everywhere at 6000rpm so it doesnt bother me.

Personal taste is personal taste and it cant be considered wrong, no matter how much Fox thinks otherwise :D

Interesting thread. I think the running figures do speak for them self. I was comparing the 330d to the 330i and despite the 330D costing at a minimu, £1500 more, the 330i seems a better choice, taking into consideration average miles. Plus, you have the added bonus of things that are less likely to go wrong on a petrol (typically because of the lack of turbo)

.. then please refrain from posting this sort of tired, unfounded and irrelevent piffle :)

Dont get your knickers in a twist - it was a mild dig at you but trying to make a point that everyone is entitled to their opinion. Its not a fact that a petrol is a better drive, it might be a fact that most people believe that to be the case but its still subjective.

Give me a 330d over a 330i any day.....

(this post is non negotiable)

They most certainly are. They sat in the range alongside each other at pretty much the same price. If you wanted a petrol, you bought the 530i, if you wanted a diesel, you bought the 530d. How much more comparable do you wish to get?
...
The 528i and 193bhp 530d were never sold alongside one another

Output and performance measures make engines comparable, not how they were marketed by the selling company .

I'm not Mark but Iwould think he "failed to grasp" this part:

"I have driven 205 HDis having owned a 1.6 GTi petrol and met up with other owners, and let me tell you it was fast as hell and bloody good fun."

That sentence doesn't really make any sense.... "I have driven 205 HDis" (Multiple examples of 205 HDi? What's a 205 HDi? Or do you mean 205 different HDi cars? If so that's a very specific number)
You then say "it" was fast as hell indicating a singular so you must mean one 205 HDis, whatever one of those is

It just doesn't read properly.

Lopez, let me explain:

- a 205 HDi is a 205 with an HDi engine in it. Since the diesel 205 is pretty much the subject of this thread, it's fairly obvious (or should be) that I wasn't referring to two hundred and five HDis, but multiple examples of.
- 'it' in my sentence refers to the driving experience

Regarding the handling of a 205 HDi, it still handles brilliantly, so people that have never driven one should not comment about how a diesel lump suddenly turns the car into a boat.

Its not going to suddenly turn a 205 into a boat, I doubt that would be possible. But I you can't tell me it doesn't negatively affect the handling in any way.

Show me some figures of the weights of the engines, and I'll happily be prooved wrong.

No, a 2.0 diesel peugeot would not beat a GTi-6 unless the GTI-6 driver wasn't allowed to use his gearbox. Sorry.

totally depends on what sort of remap it has, but many HDI owners have actually proved this should you wish to delve into this :D

The GTI-6 would dick a remapped 2.0 HDI.

More power, more revs and it's a bit lighter.

the gti-6 is actually heavier mainly because of the gearbox ;)

it certainly wouldn't 'dick' one if it was properly tuned :)

but this is OcUK, so yeah, diesels are CRAPLOLZ :p

Funny how the thread had it's origins in Stinka telling us how crap petrols are. Diesels are crap in some applications like Petrol can be crap in some applications.

Racing people on the streets the prove your car is faster is just retarded and childish. I do enjoy a hoon but that's to put a smile in my face, not try and prove that my car is teh bestest. I often have people in much superior cars want to race me off the lights, what's the bloody point, what bragging rights do you obtain when you beat a 1.4 Fiesta in, lets say, a BMW 330ci? Yeah man I totally smoked a Fiesta this morning
