Windows users get a raw deal in general when it comes to installing applications; rarely these days is there an instance when I don't find myself having to untick at least one box so that I don't end up with some variety of toolbar, media player or web browser, or have my homepage/default search settings hijacked. God knows why software developers think they have a right to do that.
Then again, Apple themselves aren't much better; installing iTunes + QuickTime nets you several fairly useless background services and tray icons. Again, they have no right in putting that stuff there without asking permission first.
