In terms of gaming and general use, would I be at a disadvantage if I brought the Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA-II 32MB instead of the Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II 32MB? Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

The Green has a 5400rpm spindle speed compared to the 7200rpm of the Black. If it's for a second storage drive then go with the Green, for a boot drive go with the Black.

I use the Green version for my back up drives and have also installed one in my PVR - they're very quiet and economical with power.

If you're after an overall quiet system then the Green would be a great choice - but if you want that extra speed, as has already been mentioned, the Black version is the obvious choice.

Plec always giving the sensible answer. :)

Hehe, you’re reply was more sensible than you give it credit - it was funny, but the metaphor was succinct and relevant. ;)

Thanks for the advice guys. The quietness of the Green is what attracted me to it. I'm not too bothered about slower boot times, but would the Green be to the detriment of gaming?

Only with level load times - but that would be negligible and wouldn't hinder your gameplay in any way. You'll just have to wait a fraction longer for a new level/cut scene to load up. If you haven't got anything to compare it with you wont notice it.

My present computer was a gift and is about seven years old, so anything should be an improvement. If the difference is negligible and only apples to load times, then I think I might go for the Green at the end of the month. However, reading the customer reviews on the Black suggests that it is also quiet, so either way, it looks like I can't go wrong.

What is the rest of your spec going to consist of?

What i mean is, if it's going to have relatively noisy fans on other components then the HDD noise will be negligible - so the Black would be the obvious choice.

However, if you’re spending extra money on building a silent system, then the Green would fit nicely within that spec.

TBH, if you’re moving from a seven year old rig the speed of both will impress you ;)

I am currently using a black and a green the green is a 1TB and the black is 320 and i honestly dont notice any speeds between them, happily used the green as a primary boot drive and the speed difference in the disks wasn't much atall still functions fine for everything i was doing including gaming and other such things. i would rather have green cause there is a temp difference. personal i really like the greens and intend to get another green 1TB =]

Thanks again. I'm planning on building my first computer at the end of the month. I've purchased a Silverstone Fortress (of which I've heard has reasonably quiet fans). I'm also hoping to buy the Thermalright Ultra with Noctua Vortex fans, so having a quiet computer is reasonably important to me. Yep, :D I think the new computer will blow me away after what I've been used to (assuming I build it properly).

Thanks for the info. I'm now leaning towards the Green, but is there much of a noise difference between them?

I have got a blue and i get can get from turning PC, chose my sccount, to onto Google in 39 seconds. Not sure how quick that is but its fine for me especially when my old pc took about 3-4 minutes

Trouble is that's a very subjective question - plus a relative one as it depends on ppls set ups.

I can hear the difference, especially with regard to my PVR, but that doesn't mean that the Black is noisy it's just that the Green is very quiet.

The only other thing I would add is that it is clear that silence is a priority with your build; looking at your case and HSF combination (great choices BTW) – Green is very quiet but it’s likely that you wouldn’t notice the noise of the Black as you wouldn’t have the Green to compare it too.

Decisions, decisions… ;)

I see what you mean, it was a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string question'. I will go away and have a good think, but have a feeling I will go for the Green. I like these decisions.

One last thing, can you enlighten me as what the images in your sig mean as I find them intriguing?

I have a 1tb green in a external drive. Took it out and use it in my comp works fine no probs
