Later today I will be replacing my Samsung 64Gb Raid0 set-up with a 128Gb G.Skill Falcon.

I want to install Windows 7 build 7100.

Should I format the drive or do anything with it before I install the OS? Or just bang W7 straight on then turn off defrag and stuff in windows?

Any other tweaks to do?

Wiper tool, what's it all about? Do I install the OS then run the wiper in windows?

Thanks

Check manufacture site/forum. Might be some updates you can do to the drive before you start using it.

No clue about wiper tool tho, sorry.

Upgrade the firmware first, you'll need to be running in IDE mode, not raid, to do this. Firmware and instructions are on the GSkill forums.

Then just install Windows as normal, it'll do the formatting. Wiper is simply a .exe that you can run whenever you like and it'll clear all the empty cells.

Tweaks will also be on the GSKill forums, but are simple things like moving the temp and tmp folders, IE8/Firefox temp files, disable indexing and hibernation.

may had just got an 256gb SSD been cheaper (samsung or falcon/vertex, samsung/corsair 256gb are cheaper and just as fast or faster as it seems from the bit-tech review)

There isnt a firmware update for the 128GB of the falcon atm. You will also need to align the drive before installing the OS, there are lots of guides around as to how to do this (OCZ forum). I would align it to 64. Then you just need to tweak the OS so disabling pagefile, hibernation, drive indexing etc. This is also well described on the OCZ forums. Oh one last thing to do is when installing W7 disconnect all the other HDDs from the system, then plug them in when your done, some reason it wont let you without doing that.

Worked fine for me with an old school hdd in as well. The only problem was it slotted itself inbetween the two partitions I'd made on the Vertex so had to use diskman to change the drive letters.

Well I aligned it to 64, installed W7 and all I get is BSODs. Not sure whats wrong.

I might try ghosting this good vista install onto it.

I've had no problems installing with lots of other HDDs in too. But it's safer to take them out to avoid accidentally installing on the wrong drive/the install doing something funny and putting the boot partition on a different drive, which can happen occasionally.

Well im not entirely sure why mine does that, but it was the same with trying to install vista and W7, its a known issue apparently. Just some advice, since his drive is exactly the same as mine.

I do believe the wiper tool is only for the vertex though it would be interesting if you downloaded and gave it a try to let the rest of us know...;)

The wiper tool is designed to keep your write speeds day one fast. It has to do with the way files are deleted on mlc ssd's.

I shouldn't think it does yet as the support for that needs to come from the raid controller, so Intel and Co need to update drivers to support TRIM on arrays.
