The all encompassing BNP thread - keep all crap in here.

OP Quote said:
‘As a former nurse in East London I read with sadness of the decision to ban the BNP. I am not a member of any political party – I believe in freedom of expression in a democracy.

... and the right to be judged accordingly? ;)

At the end of the day the BNP is not an illegal party so what gives anyone the right to ban people for being a member.

Just because you dont agree with someones political ideas that does not give you the right to discriminate against them.

The BNP as an entity is laughable and feeble, but it has a following and is not illegal. Therefore they deserve the same rights as any other political party.

And just the same as anyone else, if they decide to break laws ( ie inciting racial hatred ) they should be procecuted.

Once you go down the road of banning people from this and that due to their political belief, you are on a slippery slide and god knows where you will end up.

If you want the BNP members to be banned from things then get the BNP classed as an illegal party.

Democracy is all about tolerance to other people's views. Once you decide to pick and choose who are allowed to express those views then you are denying democracy.

If anyone, no matter what political standpoint they come from is racist and acts accordingly in the workplace then there are laws in place to deal with it. Blanket bans of political parties is a gag on democracy.

Ban the BNP as an entity.... rather than ban members from working.

As Voltaire said, ‘I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.’

Anyone has the right to get up on a soapbox and express their views... they also have to right to be booed and laughed at by the crowd for those views if no one else shares them.

Thats what democracy is all about.

Once you set up a system where by the views of a select few DECIDE who can or cannot stand on the soapbox you have no democracy.

You become the very thing that parties such as the BNP would love to introduce.

If you are going to be public about or endorse a political membership, prepare to face criticism from whoever should be against that party.

Criticism is one thing, that is free speech. Sacking someone for supporting a lawful political party? What the hell is this, China? Nazi Germany?

The main things that people moan about on these forums - typically state intervention within private lives, would be greater under the BNP.

So you agree that you want to censor and victimise supporters of lawful political parties who express lawful views which you just happen to disagree with.

And you call yourself a libertarian

once again, there is nothing libertarian about forcing employers to retain staff who have voluntarily reduced their value and employability through their actions

By the same logic we should also ban anyone who is a member of the conservative or labour party as well.

As a liberal supporter i find the views expressed by both the above parties as offensive and disgusting... ban them!

( for those with no sarcasm detection skills i am neither suggesting this nor do i support the liberals-- in fact at the moment i wouldnt vote for any party )

This is EXACTLY the same as banning members of the BNP. It is in NOT an illegal party so you cannot just decide to pick and choose who's views you like and who's you dont.

If someone acts in a way that is illegal in the workplace ( being racist for example ) laws already exist to deal with it.
