Maxtor/Seagate DRIVE FAILURE. VERY IMPORTANT!!!

This thread had me more than a little worried as i've got 4 Seagate 500gb+ drives here, fortunately according to the website they are all ok (the drive info tool that is very handy as it lets you find the serial numbers with ease).

Just got my drive back from i365
It just about made it into windows then got I got a bluescreen, now it only finds the drive if I do a full bios reset but still won't boot properly

:/

Werewolf there seem to be a few people around the net that have used the tool had it tell them their drives were not affected and they have had the same failure so sorry m8 but the tool seems to be wrong sometimes. Personally i have not used seagate or maxtor for a long long time as i had major problems with both makes some years ago but i struggle to believe what a complete **** up the 7200.11's were and how it continues to be a problem even now. Seagate just do a product recall and solve it once and for all rather then hoping you can get away with some of the drives not having the problem.

Which firmware do your drives have? If they have the affected one (SD15 iirc?) I'd look into running a firmware update / backup as the tool lies - it said my drive wasn't affected when it definitely was.

I'm running 2 ST3500320AS in raid 0 atm, bought them last November and both came with SD15, updated both firmware to SD1A as soon as they were released and so far there hasn't been any problem *touches wood*.

My Seagate 7200.11 has been sent back to netherlands for RMA, they have just sent a new drive to me should be here soon.

Yeah too bad you guys lost your HD's. Had the same prob some time back. Got so ****ed when it happend to me, I also threw out the Rosewill enclosure it was housed in :(

I think I flipped out :p

Anyway, to make a short story shorter I ended up getting another 1TiB but of the WD Enterprise flavor. I will not throw monies at Seagate any time soon...PERIOD!

Well, got to say, can't fault the service given after my 7200.11 died due to the faulty firmware, HDD collected by TNT, taken off to i365 in Holland, returned working with all my data in-tact.

My 7200.11 just died as well. Wasn't on the list needing an update either. Can still access the data via a Linux live session but it hangs on boot and won't allow me to reinstall any OS on it.

Took a couple of weeks to get mine back from Seagate but it's running fine as my new OS drive. Given it something to do where data's not important just in case though!

I won't be buying seagate again for a while until I'm happy the new drives are less trouble. WD or Samsung haven't let me down to date.

Well im officially a total idiot. As mentioned previously my 500gb drive died and i managed to recover it. And after that i didnt actually bother to check my 320gb 7200.11 was affected. Tonight i found out it is. Thankfully the data isnt that valuable, but still highly annoying since its my OS drive. Here`s hoping i can pull the same trick as last time, otherwise its a phonecall to seagate. Never buying these shoddy drives again.

No direct experience with Seagate, but of the three Maxtor sata drives I've ever purchased, all three failed and none of them had particularly heavy usage cycles. Haven't lost any data, but that's hardly the point.

Never again.
