When you are driving do you...

My wife always does it, I think she practically has an OCD about it as even if she's dropping me off at work in the morning (3 door car, me sat in the passenger seat and needing to get out in 5-7mins) she'll lock the doors. She also tries to lock them when they're already locked sometimes :)

I don't understand why the BMW cars lock when they go over 10mph, doesn't it make sense for them to lock when they are going slower than 10mph to stop people nicking stuff in slow moving traffic?

[In our E61 LCI] It locks when you go over 10mph from pulling off, and remains locked for the rest of the journey regardless of speed. It then unlocks all doors when the dashboard button is pressed, or the "key" is removed, or in an accident (at the same time as it is automatically contacting the emergency services & BMW with the cars GPS co-ordinates and damage status etc).

I don't, but occasionally if I have something of value in the passenger footwell I'll lock the door just in case. My own car actually doesn't have central locking so unless I specifically reach over and unlock it, it stays locked.

I don't lock my drivers door having got in the car. I don't have central locking either, so no 'unused' doors are ever unlocked when driving.

I can't speak for all cars, but mine (58 Berlingo Multispace II) locks after 10mph when you first move off. In other words once the car 'knows' you're actually setting off on a journey and not just shuffling down the drive, the locks activate. Once locked, they stay locked. By "over 10mph" I'm sure he didn't mean they unlock again in slow moving traffic LOL

With mine, once activated only a passenger (front only, if the electronic childlocks are also on) can open the doors using the interior handle. The only other way to open the doors is to hit the lock/unlock button on the driver's console.

When you stop the car and turn off the engine, the doors remain locked even if/when you remove the key. They instantly unlock when you activate the door handle from the inside, but nobody's able to use the outside handles. In fact, pretty much the only time the exterior handles DO work is after you've unlocked the car using the remote fob, and before you've started the engine.

lock the doors?

I have never done this, my parents or brother don't but some of my friends parents do it.

Anyone else do it and why?

I always lock the doors when I am driving. Of course it becomes less of an issue when you are shooting along the A/B roads at speed; but around town, crawling along in traffic with padestrians milling about, always.

My car is good in that respect, by pulling the internal door handle to open the door, the car unlocks and the door opens - allowing for quick getaways.

Did have a Mercedes Benz that would lock itself as soon as the car started moving.

Did in China, lots of car thefts if you're not in a guarded carpark, also used the wheel lock when away even for less than an hour.

BTW, to get back to the OP, even if my car didn't have auto-locks I'd still lock the doors. Indeed I always did in my previous cars. Stuff happens, however rare. Even if it just stops random drunks 'jumping' into your car on a weekend night, presuming you're a taxi (happens to my DJ brother-in-law a lot at the end of a shift lol), it's worth it.

Not to mention, my ever so charming home town experienced a spate of vicious in-car robberies last year. The victim stops at a junction or traffic lights, at which point hooded/masked yobs open the passenger and/or rear door, throw a Rottweiler at you, then smash your face in with a brick before removing any valuables and legging it.

Locked doors for the proverbial win!

A mate once had a crazy lady jump into the back of his car as he was reversing into a parking space and demanded to be taken to Leicester (he was in Nottingham at the time). I've looked my doors ever since.

Fairly sure I remember reading before that the fire brigade advise people not to do it. I never do anyhow, if you're scared of getting car jacked in England you have serious paranoia issues.

Just punch her telling her to get out .. or lock the doors; call the cops and say she is trying to hijack the car and is threatening you :D
