as others have pointed out, that red bull situation isn't about saving engines, it's about ensuring they get the maximum constructor points possible.

That's because the cost-saving stuff and the changes of regs have made the cars more reliable. no one blows up in flames, they are slightly slower so less big smashes, the midfield in particular are very evenly matched, only 2 teams running KERS, one set of crap tyres required for each race, but the teams cover each other off. Plus, Brawn have been developing that car for a looooooooooong time compared to everyone else.
