Diesel power smoked my M power

I know a lad from Pistonheads called Jules username Cyclone1 who has a black 335d running a map that makes it very quick, every bit as quick as a Z4M. He did 167mph at the last VMax I think and having seen it off the line at FT2007 it was very quick, putting its power down very well indeed. It was as quick as my RS4, quicker now he has it delimited I would suggest so it might have been his?

Or BigT just fluffed his gear changes and wasn't as quick off the line which is more likely

If you go on PH and search for 335d (mapped) you'll find a lot of posts from an individual who is very, shall we say enthusiastic about his (mapped) 335d.

By all accounts a very quick car when fettled, still a dirty smelly tractor though... ;)

He is a fanboy personified....bit like someone who joined this sight recently.

I'm sure that my gear changes weren't perfect, but between the lights I mentioned we were travelling for a mile or so and this thing was fast, very fast.

For example slowing down for a speed camera, I ensured I was in the correct gear as we passed through for a quick rolling launch and this thing managed to stay in front of me with ease.

Anyhow, I'm not really all that bothered about being shown up (well perhaps a little bit ;) ), just wanted to express my appreciation of the speed of a modern diesel, given I'm the first to slate oil burners normally.

:D

Can't think who you'd be talking about...

:p

Nobody ever expects my BMW to shift, they sit on my bum through 30s, and then I get to NSL signs and take off, and leave them pondering what just happened...although mine is petrol. :p

they remap to 500 lb/ft of torque and about 350bhp :o

so yes.

Just read through that. They're stating they get a 13.2 in the 1/4 mile... that's not fast for 350bhp at all. I ran that with around 250bhp. Although it does go on to say it's faster than a CSL over the 7/8ths mile. I'm definitely not doubting it's fast, but I reckon it should run a faster 1/4mile than that.

Firstly you had 4WD and secondly - I'd imagine your terminal was around 95mph, whereas the BMW would be starting to bend time.

you would do though .. as you had an impreza

4WD cars always have disproportionately fast 1/4 mile and 0-60 times. Look in last months evos "how fast" colum.

0-60 the turbo technics evo 9 (500bhp) did 0-60 in 3.8, thats 0.2 seconds quicker than the SL65 black

the SL65 mullered it to 100 though, over a second quicker.

Try comparing it with other RWD cars ,not 4wd.

Terminal was 102mph.. it doesn't say what that Bimmer does it in..

evo tested the V8 m3 at 13.0 1/4 mile but with terminal speed of 114mph. Shows just how much 4wd skews 1/4 mile and 0-60 times.

Z4M is about 4.9s 0 - 60 and a 335D is about 6 I think. So you should have won :p

Wondering if the diseasal was an auto. Makes it very easy to do quick starts, whereas the 0-60s recorded in magazines for manuals require thrashing the engine and gearbox to the absolute death.

Just have to watch some of the stuff on DR to see how brutal a road tester is.

"Hey everyone, Diesels suck hard...."

Two minutes later:

"Hey everyone, I was amazed how a diesel was out pulling me"

Awaits normal, "its the gearing that sucks" nonsense. No, it's not. A diesel gearbox matches its engine in the same way a petrol gearbox matches its engine....

Awaits the "oh but the torque converters...." nonsense. No, it's not. The BMW lineup now has a very unobtrusive torque converter allowing practically all the torques to the wheels.

I may sound like a fanboy, but I'm actually not. I love petrols and the noise of the some decent 6 / 8 pots. But people on this forum do really need to man up and realise that diesels are serious contenders nowawdays in the performance stakes.

Flame away, I don't really care. We're talking about a phat asses 335d Touring Vs a Z4. That is some weight advantage in the Z4s favour right there!

No, it doesn't. The autos have a serious delay after hitting the loud pedal to actually getting any kind of feedback. This was totally evident the other day when I had a Traffic Light GP with a manual 335i Coupe. He completely left me from the line for what seemed like an eon.

I can't resist the urge not to post this:

You have to see the thread on PH really... :o

These coupes are sickeningly pretty as well even in non ///M Sport clothes
