I haven't changed anything, it just started doing this today. The temps look fine so it can't be that. My WD drive still gets around 70-80MB/sec in HD Tune Pro. It passes SMART fine and the error checking in HD Tune Pro is fine too.

Rest of system:

XP SP3
E6320 currently @ 2.45GHz
2GB PC6400
Gigabyte S3 P965
X1950 Pro

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sorry for double post, but my hard drive has just shrunk in half. It's now a 266GB drive according to WinDirStat.

What the hell is going on lol.

Not sure what's happened, but I'd take everything you want to keep off it as it don't look good.
Then full reformat and see if that fixes it.

Sounds like your drive might have dropped out of UDMA transfer mode (back to PIO) - have a look at the 'info' tab on HDTUNE or device manager to check. If it has, it's most likely because of repeated data transfer errors.

Well I scheduled a chkdsk to see if that would help, thought it wouldn't take too long.

It's been on 0%, stage 4 of 5 for about 2 hours.

Any ideas how long this is going to take?

Also, rebooting my computer while it's doing this disk check would be very very bad for the data on the drive, wouldn't it? :o

edit: well, I rebooted anyway and now my drive is back to normal, capacity-wise. It's still going very slow though.

Here's the info tab in HD Tune.
