Hello there, it's another one of those '17/18 old male asking for car suggestions" I'm afraid, albeit a little different as I've actually got a license ;).

I've been spending the 3 or so months since passing my test pottering around the streets in a slightly modified 205 XS (rebuilt carb, posh manifold, rallye cam - I should be making a WHOLE 100BHP :p). Fun enough car, perfectly suited to my needs but for what ever reason, I just don't like it as much I should, so I'm already considering replacements.

What I'm after is a car that is slightly bigger than the 205, but still retains at least some of the fun. Not into modern cars by any means, but insurance limits me to cars 20 years old or younger. MPG is not a worry, nor is swiss watch like reliability (I only drive at weekends and am pretty handy with the spanners).

After running some left field choices past my insurance company, the shortlist currently stands at:
MK2 Golf 8v GTi
Subaru Legacy Estate (The 2.5l N/A one)
E30 BMW 316i Touring

I was wondering if anyone could drop in some more suggestions within the £2,000 mark that I haven't yet thought of?

Thanks

P.S, Suggestions of Fiestas, cilos and other similarly dull cars will be scoffed at. Sorry.

It's RWD, and in todays world, anything RWD is automatically amazing apparently.

RWD is fun, although for the money i doubt he will do much better than what he has.

How does your insurance limit you to 20 years old or younger?

I had a classic policy at 17...

That is a very odd list.

The golf gti, I doubt would be much more fun that your 205, maybe slightly quicker, and ever so slightly larger but thats it.

Subaru legacy, say what? why? Will be incredibly boring to drive.

BMW e30 316 touring, my thats specific. But why, again won't be very quick, and won't be that fun to drive. Maybe a E30 325 or something would be better.

If I were you I'd spend the money on making your 205 better, sounds great as it is. maybe an mi16 or something? Got any pics of the car? I'm interested.

why the two fun cars? Get something reliable for everyday use and pimp the 205 you have, they don't come much more fun than 205's except high end sports cars.

Not with a 316i touring though, it's a low powered weighty car, not really worth being RWD if you ask me. Hell, my 328i coupe has trouble being silly unless I really really push it, and it's got a bit more power than the 316. ;)

I had a 205xs as my first car in standard form at 85bhp. It had spax adjustables all roudn though and 1.9 alloys

I now drive an RS4 and I miss the 205 loads. The way it cornered was just amazing and beign made of nothing much in particular it was pretty quick for a 1.4! The bit I don't miss is the unrefined feel to it :)

Out of your list the golg gti is the closest.

Have you considered a gti 205? Keep their value nicely and are reliable if you look after them. Don't bother with the 1.6 though as it's not enough of a jump from the XS.
