new internet tax

I am happy with my current speed, so I see no reason why I ought to pay for other people, there are enough time wasters mooching of my tax as it is...

Amazing that any of you think the tax will genuinely go towards increasing speeds lol

They wanted this years ago, I honestly thought it would have stayed at the discussion stage but I guess they have to get money for their expensive lifestyles somehow.

I think EVERYONE on here knows, this is just a tax to claw back votes because it may help to get some much needed cash.

You dont have speeds less than 2mb/sec do you?

When do I get FTTH at 100Mb?

(Likely answer, no time sooner - it will still be a private company not getting any help to lay fibre to remoter locations...)

I am EXTREMELY annoyed by this tax.

What the report outlines is absolutely NO improvement of my existing services.

If I go to most other countries in the western world I find better broadband speeds at lower prices.

We are being taxed for a service that already exists plane and simple.

I'm not bothered by this because it's only 50p a month on something that isn't compulsory (land line rental) and it will be used to upgrade the infrastructure across the country so that everyone has access to high-speed internet (compared with dial-up). Provided it's actually used for that purpose then I don't see the problem. If it bothers people that much then get rid of your landlines so you don't have to pay line rental.

One thought though: if BT hadn't have been privatised then this infrastructure could have been paid for by their profits instead of going to shareholders. Once again we are paying for the mistakes of past governments and the "private sector = better" myth.

If you look at the world leaders in retail broadband - South Korea, where a stupidly large percentage of the population have access to 100Mb broadband - it was the government who invested in the infrastructure, not private companies.

am all ready paying a fortune for my line rental and my broadband so he can **** off if he thinks am paying more on a tax thats most likely going to pay for some MPs new swimming pool

that sucks donkey b*lls

I thought that is what i pay vm for.

So what if the existing system needs to be be upgraded get BT to pay for that it's their system!! Mr.Brown wants the UK to be a world leading in the internet, so we can be the worlds fastest porn downloaders. I doubt we will be the most advanced in the world as some place are into the 100's of mb per second.

What about jobs and getting the economy sorted out first mate! Just sounds like another tax to me. Hello what do we have here people having fun for free thats not right lets tax them

If the government is so keen to ensure everyone has access to at least basic broadband, and it's not going to happen through private investment then we're going to end up paying for it somehow, whether it's through normal taxation, an additional levy or higher service costs subsidising investment.

The stupid thing is everyone's describing this as an internet tax, but it's a levy on fixed land lines. So my gran ends up paying the levy even though she doesn't use the internet, yet I can go out and sign up for a broadband only service from VM and not have to pay it.

If you refuse to pay £6 a year so that everyone can have the benefit of a broadband connection with a resonable speed then you're a miserly git, enough said.

Why should I? I am happy with the cheapest O2 offer, whatever it is... I am not interested in higher speeds.

If they increased upload speed, then I would be interested.

Not really it's like and person that has built a house in the middle of no where
and needs a gas and electricity line run to the house. Then asked everyone to pay for it.

Sorry but if your naive enough to believe this is going to benefit the internet and increase our speeds, then you need to get your head checked.
