***The Official iPhone 3.0 Thread***

Is this update worth doing ? Is it easy to do?

I have a 2G iPhone thats running fine at the moment and dont want to bugger it up but do want to see the new features :)

So, until they implement something to do that, they can't do anything.

I think they have, and i dont advise anybody to do it. A friend of mine set his up today using the "config file" method. He had a call from O2 this afternoon to advise him he has been caught tethering without the add-on. He argued the toss about he already has unlimited data, e.t.c. but simply put they said stop it or else you will be charged for the data used. Word of warning.

I got mine at 14:37; 3 and a half hours shy of 24 hours.

Can understand the delay to be honest - I'm sure everyone went mad with the MMS thing so it's only natural it'll take a bit of time to filter out. Not in that big a rush to actually MMS either way so maybe that's helping my patience.

Quick question

Why do my mates Iphones say 3G in the top left hand corner of the screen when ive never seen that on mine :S (and yes my iphone is a 3G)

Have i got something turned off ?

Sam

BS.

Well, I spent last night sniffing a normal data stream, and there was nothing in there, in the startup, handshake or the shutdown that could indicate to the peer that "I am tethered to something". I am of no doubt that O2 are going to scare people otherwise, and tell their staff to suggest to customers that they can detect tethered connections, but that doesn't make it true

I disagree, O2 are charging for tethering on 3gig and 10gig packages and charging for every MB over this. They can't do this unless they can monitor the usage separately from the iphone usage.

With the sniffer you put on, is it showing the tethering app is connecting to the same ip address/port and using the same login details as a normal data connection from the iphone ?

have you used the phones 3g capabilities on your phone before?

Check in settings > general > network

Enable 3G - Yes

Data Roaming - Off

I only ever see a circle or an E in the top left hand corner .... Neva seen it say 3G

Data Roaming should be on when in the UK. With it off however you shouldn't have any data access other than through WIFI when it sounds like you do have data access.

It doesn't matter if data roaming is on or off when you are in the UK because you won't be roaming unless. That setting just prevents data usage when you are not on your 'home' network. I have it set to off because it's a safer option if I forget to turn it off when abroad.

lol

Dave the Dangerous has it wrong. Data Roaming needs to be enabled if you wish to use data whilst in a foreign country, using a partner network. It doesn't matter if you have it on or off whilst in the UK.

I honestly don't care if you believe me or not, why would i lie? Do you really think that o2 would be that naive not to put some kind of monitoring in place? If you want to go ahead and do it then fine, but i don't fancy your bill much next month - not that i agree with the charging anyway, i think its ludicrous and without doubt Ofcom will be all over them for sure.

If you have an iPhone 3G and have "neva seen is say 3G", then you've never been in a 3G signal area

Had the phone for a good 6 months now and im out and about all the time infactwas sitting in a pub last night and my mates displayed the 3G icon but mine did not hence the reason for this question ....

Have you tried going to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings? I'd give that a shot.

Sorry didn't know that I assumed it would kill all data usage over the cell network if for example you weren't on a unlimited data so wanted to turn it off.
