***The Official iPhone 3.0 Thread***

Just done the tethering thing and set up MMS so I'm happy.

I won't be able to test the tethering until I get home tonight but the profile install was a piece of cake and it hasn't broken my MMS.

Panzer

I just deleted that downloaded carrier package and Tethering remains intact :)

So how do I go about upgrading?

You can't ask that here.

Right, an update to the settings / tethering confusion.

The default settings for iPhone 02 pay monthly and 02 PAYG can be found here with some nice screenshots.

Those looking to follow the tethering activation may or may not need to change the data, depending on the resulting settings after the carrier package install.. I believe the settings posted by me above are fine for those running a iPhone tariff

Those running tariffs other than an iPhone tariff can use the settings found here e.g. simplicity

I followed the instructions to set up tethering and the last set is "plug into your mac" Just wondering i have a windows laptop with vista will it still work? I'm not in a 3G area at the moment to check :(

Guys bear in mind that you might be in breach of your T&Cs if you do the old switcharoo on the APNs.

I would seriously advise people against using this as I know measures have been put in place specifically to catch people tethering iPhones without paying.
Currently there is no way that O2 will be able to distinguish between data proxied via the phone and data used by the phone itself (e.g. Safari). So, until they implement something to do that, they can't do anything.

I am not saying they won't implement a way to do it, but until the phone broadcasts "This data connection is from a tethered modem, charge me", they have no way of knowing (and imo, this is impossible - there would be no way for O2 to monitor tethering via the Wifi networks from BT, The Cloud etc).

OK, you know better than me obviously. :)

Those who know me I'm sure will take heed of my warning. Anyway, that's all I'm saying on the matter.

I find it hard to believe that they wouldn't have anticipated this and put some kind of procedure in place, so I'll go with Wicksta!

Well, I spent last night sniffing a normal data stream, and there was nothing in there, in the handshake or the shutdown that could indicate to the peer that "I am tethered to something". I am of no doubt that O2 are going to scare people otherwise, and tell their staff to suggest to customers that they can detect tethered connections, but that doesn't make it true

Hatter no one is trying to scare anyone here it's just a bit of friendly advice. Take it or leave it :)

There's no way they will know unless they see the usage graph skyrocket

I use my iPhone in work, it has my email "pushed" and I imagine the data usage is higher than normal when I browse the net and download apps (rare, but I do it sometimes while on lunch as the 3G coverage here is excellent).

They will probably push out a carrier update to break this no doubt, but in my eyes they're going to have a hard time finding those users who only use it on occassion (if the phone isn't giving out any details while tethered).

There is no way it would be this easy to bypass the tethering. I would expect 02 to be able to monitor the browser in use. Vodaphone for example can already do this on 3g traffic. Reading through the settings needing changed you don't need to put a sniffer on the traffic to see how they will detect unauthorised use.

The unlimited data will be on the idata signon and the tethering going through the 02wap signon all they need to do is match the phone to your account and they will see you haven't payed for the tethering. I expect contract customers will be getting a bill for data usage next month !
