Home drinking - cider / perry tasting notes

Stowford press is my poison of choice. Really nice, around 6 percent so not going to blow your kidneys, and really is amber nectar. If drinking for the red nose effect, Westons special reserve is a good brew. It is smoother than scrumpy, but is still quite dry and is 8.2 percent, designed to make a night start with a bang of some sorts.

Not sure if the offer is still on but its buy 2 get 3rd free on a range of bottled ciders in Tesco, or at least it was a week or so ago, me and a friend decided to try a few that night, quite enjoyed the Katys one, the Oakleys was nice, Bulmers apple and pear are nice although I was hard pressed to tell the difference. We also had a dry cider, I prefer sweet cider myself so it wasn't that nice personally.

I quite enjoy a nice cider although usually drink lagers, although I think I will be buying more ciders from now on, they dont seem to bloat you as much as lagers and usually taste nicer.

Ok here we go - it's been a long day at work but finally I can sit down and test some of these out. The Waitrose strong cider looks particularly moody.

1. Gaymers 'Somerset' Medium Dry Cider 5.9%

+ Smooth and tasty
+ Comes in a stylish looking bottle
+ No 'clawing taste'
+ Flatter than I expected, which I'm liking.
- Not very exciting.

Verdict: cider for civilised people, and women.

Thatchers Katy and Cox's are both lovely.

Brothers Pear Festival needs to be tried.
Bulmers and gaymers are rancid tbh even their pear ones taste of chemically own brand crap.

Westons Pear Perry is rather nice and very easily drinkable.
Aspalls is meant to be rather nice but never tried it myself.

My normal place for cider is morrisons, very good selection and most are 4 for a fiver ;)
4 Brothers festival pear for a FIVER!!!! WOO

2. El Gaitero Medium Dry Spanish Cider 5.5%

+ Smells sharp, but tastes smoother than you expect
+ Quite sweet, but not overly so
+ Fairly refreshing
- A bit clawing, fair bit of residual after taste
- Small bottle
- Expensive for what it is
- Again not very exciting
- Not British

Verdict: it's probably alright with some cheese, but then so is most booze

Kopparberg Pear Cider £1.43

This is the king of kings when it comes to drinks. Dont try to beat it, because you cant.

I think the Kopparberg elderflower and lime is the best out of the range. It was 3 for £3 a few weeks back in Asda so i got like 9.......they didnt last very long

On a side note, Celebrity Masterchef is rubbish. Who are these people? Their food looks god awful too.

Not sure what to have next - I think the Aspinall's followed by the Kopparberg Pear.

3. Aspall Dry Suffolk Cyder 7%

+ Fantastic smooth, rounded taste
+ Classy looking tall bottle, obviously comes from a company that cares and has a strong history
+ No clawing sweetness
- So easy drinking it tastes lower than 7%... probably packs a punch if you're not careful

Verdict: great cider, this is proper stuff!

(hmmm... perhaps I just prefer dry over mediums...)

4. Kopparberg Pear Cider 4.5%

+ Easy drinking
+ Sugar
- Smells like Haribo
- Tastes like Haribo
- Probably is liquid Haribo

Verdict: this is an unholy abomination of all that is sacred to traditional cider and perry

Bulmers and GAYmers are an insult to proer nice cider.

Bulmers is perfectly drinkable; hardly a stellar cider to be sure but unlike Strongbow, Blackthorn and the ilk drinking it doesn't make you wish you'd opted to be taken roughly by a badger instead.

5. Waitrose English Perry 8%

+ Tastes of pears and proper stuff
+ Fantastic rounded flavour
+ Is strong and tastes strong, this is proper badger badger juice, ideal for post-BBQ drinks as a wine alternative
- Slight roof of mouth clawing
- Perhaps deserves to be more cloudy - it's very clear

That's it for tonight, I think the Waitrose Perry and Aspall's Cider are clear front-runners so far. I'll be adding some of your choices if I can find them over the next few weeks.

They sell it in Sainsburys I think...

*no answer :( they close at 11 but no one is near the phone now I guess
