I have three drives in my system 1 x 500gb hitachi deckstar. 1 x 320gb maxtor and a 250 hitachi deckstar. I have been looking at getting a 1tb drive and getting rid of the 320 and 250. Is it worth it or should i just stick with what i've got?

I use the 500gb for windows and stuff and the others just for storage of film photo's music and backups.

You might see a marginal performance benefit by putting "windows and stuff" on a new high-density 1TB drive, but otherwise it's just a question of capacity, and only you will know if you've got enough with your existing setup.

As a general rule, I wouldn't buy a new hard drive unless and until I genuinely needed the extra storage space, for whatever reason - prices are shrinking and capacities increasing all the time, so if you buy more capacity before you actually need it you're effectively shooting yourself in the foot.

That said, a single high-capacity drive will have certain advantages over several smaller ones in terms of noise, power consumption, heat generated and so on, but again it's all largely subjective and depends on your own personal priorities. :)

My thought as well ian. Prices are very low at the moment. Might get a little lower but can not see much more of a drop.

Some good points to think about captian. Tbh i'm more fed up with having to move files from one drive to another to make space on the two smaller ones. Would be nice to just have one storage drive thats it.

you could always have a server with windows home server and merge every single harddrive you have no matter what size to one big chunk.
Would be very dangerous though.

Why would it be dangerous??

WHS is designed to allow a single drive failure (sort of like Raid 5, but works in a different way), so would be much safer if you were to do that.

just ordered 1.

Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103UJ)

£66.99 inc VAT

that is a bargain price.

you can never have enough storage space.

The hitachis have been as low as 45inc new recently.
Have seen the sammis at 55 too.

Cracking prices on both of those drives, just waiting for a decent price on the F1s again and Im gonna nab another couple :)
