But no lame hollywood BS, on a french kick at the moment, the likes of Haute Tension (Switchblade Romance), Frontieres, Martyrs, Calvaire (The Ordeal)...would love more suggestions similar to these. Not just french lately though, also watched Rec, El Orfanato, Let The Right One In

Seems to me that the french have taken over from the japanese as the kings of contemporary horror. I'm more open to foreign horror, anything without the hollywood polished look does well in my book.

I've probably seen most of the american/british stuff you might suggest, but go ahead and try to surprise me anyway. I loved Eden Lake, The Children, Dying Breed, Drag Me To Hell, Plague Town, Last House On The Left (remake)

Suggestions i've had from friends are Inside, Anatomie, Sheitan, Devils Backbone, Antichrist.

Anyway, i've rambled enough, suggest away please :D

If you really want to be left repulsed, watch Cannibal Holocaust.

I hasten to add that Cannibal Holocaust features some very unsettling scenes including a horrific rape scene and the butchering of live animals. I didn't enjoy it, but it's what you requested... a truly disturbing film.

I should have said it's not just gore i'm after, i like a decent story and not just a movie made for gore thrill kills. That said, I don't mind gore but the movie needs more to it than just to shock. :)

Trust me, it isn't the gore that is the 'worst' part of Cannibal Holocaust. The whole film makes you feel sick from the wicked and repulsive activities that the characters and the film makers got up to. No film has chilled me more. If you want a twisted film, you can't go wrong.

But I didn't say you would enjoy it.

didn't read the title properly :)

for me, it's 'one of a kind' factor was outstanding, felt the same way after watching 'Seven'

Twisted yes, but not really a horror film. I have been quite vocal previously about how overhyped I think Oldboy is, but I'm aware I'm in the minority.

"OldBoy" is overhyped to the max, but one of the only films I've ever seen where said overhyping - while you recognise it is indeed overhyped - doesn't act to the film's detriment.

To the OP :

With regards to twisted horror flicks, the French are indeed leading the wave. See "Inside" and "Martyrs".

If you can stomach it (and not just because of the grue but the bankrupt production values), "August Underground's Mordum" may make you want to take a long shower afterwards. Toetag Pictures' "The Redsin Tower" is their first actual narrative-based flick since then, and it's pretty damn good.

Going back in time, see if you can I'd recommend getting your hands on "The Untold Story", a 90's CAT III Hong Kong flick which has a mean streak a mile wide.

Can't really think of much right now that is noticable for more than the gore factor, though that might be a product of how desensitised I am to it all!

I've heard about cannibal holocaust, I doubt there are many people who haven't. However I don't watch horror movies just for shock value, it has to contribute to the story in some way, from what i've read/heard it seems that CH was made primarily to shock and offend. That said, i'll probably give it a go all the same ;)

I think I differ from the majority in that I don't consider a horror film to be something that just has say ghosts, murder, gore, violence, creatures and so on. For me, it's simply a film that horrifies me...although I am pretty desensitized these days from over exposure. I've seen mainstream drama/thriller movies that I personally call horror movies.

Seven! Best film EVAR!

That's all.

Agreed...it is very good, Fincher is a fantastic director, I honestly can say i've thoroughly enjoyed all of his movies.

Martyrs was wonderful in the sense that I felt like I was finally seeing something new in horror, it is very rare that we get a horror film that does something new and unique. Obviously it had elements borrowed from other movies, but is a one of a kind horror movie.

Now what really frustrates me is people moaning that modern horror is awful and then won't sit and watch a foreign movie.

Don't we get a thread like this every week now?

No idea...pop in here every now and then, don't see much horror stuff but apologies if i'm retreading the same ground other posters have asked about.

Haven't seen or heard of any of those, will go on my "to watch" list...and yes, I really do have one. I see so many trailers and forget about movies all the time so have to make a list.

I can't really give any really good suggestions... most of the horror films aren't very gruesome yet a good story, or the opposite way around at the moment it seems.

Go ahead and suggest something, i'm willing to sacrifice one for the other, in both cases.

'Man bites dog' and 'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer'

Good suggestions.

Also see if you can get "Maniac" and "Combat Shock". The latter is extremely rough (the fact it was picked up for distribution by Troma speaks volumes) but it's very harsh.

Also, the Asian flick "Evil Dead Trap" features some great kill scenes and a totally twisted finale.
