I just don't 'get' Halo...

Got my 360 early last year and never had an Xbox before that. As Halo the the big thing for xbox/xbox 360, I decided to play from the first.

I found it a real chore to get through, mainly for the level design. I struggled to stick with it. It certainly had it's moments, and I quite enjoyed the setting/world/story, but it was a lot more old school than I was accustomed to by this point in time.

Didn't hold out much hope for the 2nd, but found it to be good fun, and certianly more enjoyable than the first. I was really coming to like Master Chief/The AI chick/Arbiter(?). Was a lot more varied than the first adn enjoyed the time playin as the Arbiter(?)

Then Finally got around to playing 3. It was still ok fun, but didn't enjoy it as much as the 2nd. Also, found it quite odd that the graphics seemed to get worse the further into the game you got - first level was really pretty. I was quite attached to the characters by this point, and think that's what I liked most about these games - the characters.

Have only dabbled in Halo 3 MP, but it's not really my cup of tea. Have had some fun moments, but generally I feel more at home with something like COD4 for MP.

Overall, the Halo series is not a bad series, and I can certainly see why it appealed to the console crowd, and why most pc gamers turn their nose up at them.

Based on the way Halos ranking system works, would you be happy to join a game midway though to find out your team is 30 points down?

Also we all know the solution to this, get a party of 5 players (its the same solution to being teamed up with idiots)

Halo's ranking system is crap anyway, and should be dropped for a better system.

I cant see anything wrong with it, (I know you think its biased against you)

You win a few games you go up a level, you lose a few games you go down a level. The more games you play and win the more experience you get the higher the experience you have the more stable your rank number should be.

What would you propose?

It was my understanding that you could lose games and still go up ratings, as long as you pwned. I'm pretty much stick at 13 though most of the ranked playlists are DL only now so I can't play them.

I know its the anti reasoning of this thread, But i fancy playing Halo 1 now :D

I have both 1, 2 and 3. So i may go through the trilogy this weekend. Why not lol

I never understand this, what do people find so enthralling about it, I almost murdered people for going on about "FPS 2.0" when it came out, but it seemed like nothing special to me, see enemies, shoot enemies.

The narrative, story and environment actually engage you in beyond runnyshooty.

The same way that Half Life 2's intro was absolutely storming. To be replaced with... well nothing. The combat was great but I felt no involvement to what was going on in the game. I find most FPSs very hard to feel involved in. Halo I did, Bioshock I did... now trying out Crysis to see if I can get into that (although the rather hammy voicing of Psycho doesn't help much).

FEAR2 I thought was terrible, Killzone just doesn't have much happen in it apart from "we've been dropped on a planet and need to keep pushing forwards". Resistance had the potential to be interesting if only it wasn't for the terrible opening levels!

I think the thing about most of them is that I felt like I wasn't going to be surprised at what was coming around the corner at any point. Bioshock kept with it all the way through, plus a great twist that ranks up there with Master Miller's reveal in MGS imo.

I do quite like halo 3 MP. But its pretty 1 dimensional. When its good its OK when the games going badly its pretty frustrating and everyone jumping around like a tit adds to the annoyance.

Also The amount of health is a touch too far IMO. I see people from far away and there's no point in engaging as they'll jump off behind a rock before I get the 4th head shot in.

I really hope that reach mixes up the whole experience and gives it a fresh approach....but I expect ultimately more of the same.

I really liked halo 1 but part of me feels bungie lucked out with the vibe they managed to capture, as I've found the whole thing quite sickly since.

A couple of questions.

Would most of the gamers who dislike Halo, be more PC FPS gamers rather than console gamers?

What difficulty setting did the gamers that Dislike it, find that not much was happening or found it too easy play it on?

I think there is also an issue with weapon selection in some cases as each weapon has it uses eg if you used the plasma pistol incorrectly (rapidly firing it or shooting it at unshielded enemies) your going to be thinking "WTF?" but if you charged the gun up and fired it at a shielded elite and then followed that up with a pistol (or BR) shot to the head you'll find that works much better.

Also if you lay back and "snipe" everything I could imagine that being a bit boring the game is for the most part expected to be played within grenade range.

1) yes but i play fps on consoles pretty often to play with friends who dont do pc gaming.

2) i play every game i can on the hardest setting possible from the beginning so usually medium/hard depending on wat is available before the unlock at the end.

3) i think i generally understand the mechanics of any game im playing lol :D

like i said, nothing agianst halo really, i like it, good solid game, just dont see why a lot of people give it the praise it gets :)

I ignore all ranking systems as I haven't seen even a half decent one outside of a tournament or ladder setting.

The only time I have an issue with the halo3 ranking system is when the party your in has a few players that polar opposites in Rank, unfortunately the game can not figure out how to get them into some gametypes. My impression is that it trys to find other parties with a players of a similar skill range. What it should do is try that and if it cant find anything in 30 seconds it should take your parties average skill and find another party with the same average skill +/- 10

I think overall though its not bad, there is nothing I have encountered that works better (although I have not played many other matchmaking XBL FPS games in a long while).

I'll tell you whats great about matchmaking, when hosts quit the game doesn't end. That's really frustrating when you're enjoying a game and the host quits.

Nope, I could never ‘get’ Halo either – to me it was just a run of the mill FPS game that had gotten a huge amount of hype for no apparent reason (to me of course), and I could never shake off the feeling that it was a somewhat cutesy affair; brightly coloured enemies running about shooting just as brightly coloured guns whilst making ‘hilarious’ remarks in cute little voices

I played Halo 3 through with a mate for co-op, and whilst it was enjoyable enough to pass the time, I certainly didn’t feel part of some cinematic ‘space opera’, the same old nagging feeling that I was playing a Fisher Price shooter was still there :( The graphics, sound and general effects were also a bit pants in most places too.

Each to their own though, there’s certainly legions that enjoy the game, and even more who are far too passionate about it – some have probably already posted in this thread defending their baby :D

Scort.

With regards to how popular this game still is, I went on last night at 5.00pm and there were over 225,000 people online.

It has the best matchmaking/party system of any game on Xbox Live in my opinion.

Yes it's not everyones cup of tea but get 4 or 5 mates online and you will have a blast, don't forget about the many different game varients there are, i.e Griffball, Ninjaball etc.

Halo comes into it's own for me when you ramp up the difficulty settings. It's the only single player fps that really demands practise to master and has an almost perfect balance. While i'll stroll through other fps on the hardest setting in about a week, the Halo games have me lasted years, and there's still plenty of room for improvement.

Halo is the only single player fps that requires online multiplayer levels of reactions and skill to be really good at.

I don't 'get it' either :(

When I first played Halo 1 I had previously played Unreal 2 on the PC (despite Halo coming first). Halo simply felt like a poor mans Unreal and I never bothered with it again.

Also I believe we have Halo to blame for crappy 'camp behind a rock until your health regens' systems

Does my nut in tbh :p

I've been a massive FPS fan since i started PC gaming yrs ago and I thought Halo was excellent, kinda went down hill after the first but, I remember Halo kept me playing non stop for 3hrs, no other game had me that interested since Half Life.

The online modes however do nothing for me at all. I Find it slow and boring compared to games like Counterstrike and CoD4.

Wasn't Halo the first fps to allow you to toss a grenade without having to 'equip' it first? If so, it gets kudos for that.

But I don't like the games themselves. Not in the slightest, I'm afraid.
