Dammit, just bought one of these drives and have only just read all the horror stories about them failing!

Thinking of sending it back and swapping for a different drive now. Are they really that bad?

Mine was fine for the 2+ months I had it, sold it recently on the MM though due to space constraints in my new Matx system, only had space for 2 hard-drives and wanted to RAID0 some WD RE3 320GB's so it had to go.

It might not be affected, depends on the firmware revision. While it's still working you can apply a patch from Seagate to prevent it failing.

The 1.5TB Seagate drives are NOT affected by the problem in all the other Seagate drives. I'm yet to hear of anyone who has checked their 1.5TB drive with the Seagate checker and it come back with a positive on their model\firmware combination.

yes my 1.5tb that i purchased a few days after they came out is not affected either.

i agree too, i have not heard of any 1.5tb being affected

Mine lasted 30 minutes, what a load ****

So now I have to pay to send it back

Oh ..... and serial checker says my drive is not affected :(

I've gone off seagates ever since the whole Noisy 7200.10 saga...
Well this is the first Seagate drive i think ive ever bought, i'll be sticking with Samsung from now on - not had one of the F1's die on me yet, not even the one which has been giving me a SMART error for the last year!

Seagate drives purchased after christmas will NOT be affected by the firmware bug (as they will have a newer firmware on them - should be CC1H), but this doesn't mean they won't break as it could be something else.

The firmware update was only released to fix a very specific issue which is what the serial checker is for.

Just got 2 of these drives, firmware is CC1H, checked online just in case and no need to update the firmware. Just copying the contents of 2 of my 500GB drives onto each at the mo, will take just under 3 hours to do this but so far the 1 drive I've got powered up is very quiet and seems to be working. :)

I'm planning on keeping the 500GB drives intact for around a month just in case as backups before I wang them into RAID 0 and use as my OS drive.

i got myself a 1.5tb seagate a few weeks ago. checked the firmware/model/serial of the drive & it said it was unaffected. a few days back it started clicking and clunking a lot and became inaccessible. since then its running ok though although its louder when spinning and i dont trust it at all. going to look to backing it up incase it fails & replace it with some WD greens

HDDs do not always give you those nice warning sounds, sometimes they just die. Should be backed up anyway. :)
