What is the deal with men wearing long shorts nowadays?

I like men in these long length shorts, just so long as the person wearing them has correct shoe-age and no socks. Sandals but not trainers, with clean feet and tidy nails. The trousers should be linen or cotton, not shell suit stylie and may have pockets but not baggy ones stuffed full of phones/ ipods etc.

Shorter shorts with ugly / hairy legs is horrible, so the extra length (ooh matron) gives a more attractive appearance and allows those with perhaps skinny legs to wear anything other than full length trousers in the summer.

LOL are you female?

You must be a woman to say that....

No man would care enough

I bought a pair of linen longer shorts, knee length, a couple of weeks ago and they are really comfortable and keep you nice a cool. Also if you couple them with a nice pair of sandals I don't think you look like a numpty.

I do like my shorter shorts, mid thigh, but I feel my legs are slightly hairy to comfortably pull these off anywhere but the beach.

I know, exposing your thighs in summertime, it's just not on is it

It's more of what makes you feel comfortable, if you are comfortable wearing short shorts in a town/pub etc then all power to you.

Do all women only dress in order to show themselves off or to please men?

Some do, it's argued they dress nicely to make themselves feel good more than anything though. Showing off/looking pretty is part and parcel of our culture if you like it or not, and if not you're a gayer. ;)

If long shorts have a higher utility value (remember, not fashion related) than short ones, which has been said numerous times in this thread, why don't more women wear them?

As Rich mentioned, because they generally always have at least 1 bag on them. Plus the silhouette is more important in women's fashion, so having some chunky pockets would detract from that somewhat. :p

The time being summer and the place being outdoors?

Are you always outdoors in summer? Personally I go in pubs/restaurants/other places. If I'm out late as well a longer short is far more "smart" to wear to a nice pub or restaurant in the evening.

Quite possibly. After all you might get people thinking you're gay and wonder about your manliness. That would never do.

I don't take much heed of what other people think/might think personally. If someone judges me on some triviality then they're probably not worth knowing. I'm sure people judge me because I have long hair, personally I couldn't give a rats ass.

The practical meaning of fashion seems to be that most people will wear what most other people wear, BECAUSE most other people are wearing it.

Personally I wear what I like, I might see someone (be that someone I meet or in some form of media) wearing something different and think "hmmm, that looks nice" then buy something similar.

I couldn't tell you much about fashion trends, I just wear what I like. If those likes are influenced by what I experience and what is available, so be it. But I shop in quite a diverse range of shops and expose myself to a wide range of influences so you definitely couldn't pigeon hole me.

:p

I wouldn't be and I don't, because it isn't socially acceptable nowadays for some reason. It was not so long ago though.

Of course, that's why I said 'all' - you seem to have missed that word from my post.

If I go to a nice restaurant, I would wear full length trousers. Do any nice restaurants allow people in looking like chavs? I doubt it but maybe we have different ideas about what constitutes a nice restaurant.

Fair enough, I think I am much the same. eg. flares came back into fashion, inexplicably, but I'll never wear them. But if people really think they look good then more power to them.

Well clearly you don't think the same, you're far more worried what other people think and about what other people are wearing than anyone here who wears long shorts :p

is it me, or...

I wouldn't say it wasn't socially acceptable, merely against the norm (which is no bad thing). I've never been a fan of falling in line to consensus norms.

Of course, that's why I said 'all' - you seem to have missed that word from my post.

You also failed to quote the rest of my paragraph and address my other points. :p

I don't see how you equate long shorts with chavs personally, also I never said nice restaurant, I said "nice pub or restaurant". :p

Even so, on a summers night I'd be quite comfortable turning up to a nice restaurant in long shorts, sandals and a smart shirt (by nice restaurant I'm talking spending about £50 a head). In fact I did that only last month. :)

It seems like you care about fashion and conforming to perceived societal norms much more than I do. If I wanted to wear something, I would.

Fashion (and culture in general) have "norms" that are transient, you will feel out of place unless you embrace the change. Bottom line is if it looks good and doesn't horrifically offend the vast majority then it doesn't matters if you go against the "norm".

Wear short shorts, who knows you may start a trend.

I wear fitted shorts for Hockey, but will often wear 3/4s lengths and long shorts when I am slobbing around at home, or working in the garden/garage.

They can be better than shorter shorts, as they protect your knees from getting scratched up, or sore when kneeling. Especially when mine are usually already grazed from Hockey!

I think long shorts look really awful. For old people/people without fashion sense.

What's wrong with shorts that end just above the knee?

i dont know why the OP ever bothers to start threads that ask for opinions or reasoning

i cant remember a time where he has ever accepted someone else might be right :p

Well, in the context of this thread that would be long shorts.

Maybe the worst thing about short shorts is sitting on a plastic or leather chair, particularly in a car that's been in the sun. First you get the burning sensation, then the clamminess. Of course women have to put up with this but as I said earlier, women's clothes are often impractical.

A) long shorts are more comfortable
B) Look better
C) aren't gay like short shorts.

This ^

Some of us aren't metro enough to warrant "worrying" about not tanning from the knee up.

Some people prefer comfort and not looking like a giant ****s in public.

I also prefer to cover up more because I am fair skinned, don't tan very well - infact BURN and therefore don't like being in the sun too long.

Never mind not liking the sun very much, if you're going outside and it's a sunny day wear sunblock. That way you won't burn and thus decrease your chance of developing skin cancer.
