DC2's

F1's are the bestest tyres ever made, magazine results prove it beyond reasonable doubt.

Oh, sorry - I forgot Fox is on holiday isn't he?

They're crap.

If you're test driving one then check there is no crunching between 2nd and 3rd, and 4th to 5th gear...gear synchro issues are bad news, should only be something to watch for on 100k+ cars though. Other than that, the usual checking over for rust etc applies.

Running costs are minute considering the cars capabilities, fuel tank is small though. :)

What is the soot issue? Anything to look out for or what to do when going to look at one?

A lot of them burn oil, some more than others, to be honest it can get really silly, before my rebuild I was going through a litre in a few hundred miles. Like I say, some are a lot worse than others, it's the number one thing i'd be checking when I went to see a car though. Get the engine nice and warm, get on a dual carriageway at say 60 mph, 3rd gear and let it coast a fair bit down a slip road. When you move away at the bottom check for blue smoke behind you. Some cars only smoke at high revs / gear changes. definitely one to look out for :)

Rear arches are about 500 quid for both if done properly and the damage is not too bad. Quarter panels are 700 quid each if they are really knackered so make sure its not too bad, get your fingers under the arch and check for holes under there. Mine were done for 580ish from tgm sport in fleet and were fairly bad. Starting to bubble a little in a different place now which is annoying.

98 spec or 99- uk steering wheel is what you would want. Probs about 100 quid second hand or i think around 800 from honda (lol!) or just go for a light wheel to replace the old stlye wheel as it looks terrible and is quite heavy - I think there is a way to disable the srs light (or just remove the light).

Bolster foam is about 35 quid from capital seating and the alcantara is 55 or so if the fabric is knackered so thats a fairly cheap fix.

5k is well over priced for that. Its an early model in not great condition. I would say its worth closer to 4k.

As the back is very dirty I would get someone to follow you while you drive and get them to watch for blue smoke etc when you hit vtec as its not normal for that amount of soot (unless its just a bad photo).

As said before check for synchro crunches especially in 2nd and fourth (about 600 quid to put right if it needs doing).

Tyres must all be re010s, rs2s or r888s or the car wont feel like its supposed to. I think re010s are not made anymore and there is a 3 week wait on rs2s. r888s are expensive and wear out quickly so not good for every day but they grip like nothing else :)

Another weakness is seized rear calipers. I had both mine done earlier this year and that was about 400 quid (including pads and fitting) after I swapped my old calipers with brakes international.

Cant remember what discs are I think about 100 quid a pair or so (nothing major really) and pads are around 40 a pair. Servicing is about 200 quid for a major and 80 for an oil change. (Obv less if you supply your own oil). I get about 40 mpg on the motorway and about 25 when pressing on cross country. All in all a very cheap to run car for the performance and smile factor.

r888s for day to day road use? the teg really lacks grip, i can see why those are needed

£40 for pads? i suppose with r888s it will stop the moment you come off the throttle as theyre like driving on velcro. £40 should get you tesco or halfords pads though

£80 for an oil change? how much oil do those mental teg engines hold?

do teg owners really send in 10 year old jap boxes to be serviced? i didnt have them down as window licking mentalists

why not pair one of the best chassis available with a tyre that works very well too? Seems logical to me.

Driven many cars with 888s on then? I noticed little to no difference in the way the car slowed off throttle. I paid not much more than £40 for a cet of Hawk pads and they stop the car fantastically well, i've never been left wanting better brakes.

These mental engines hold about a gallon of oil, they seem to like Silkolene Pro S which is about a £55 a gallon, fiver for a decent filter and the rest to let someone get their hands dirty. It's a pittance really and it's the lifeblood of the engine, why on Earth would you skimp out to save a few quid? Remember they rev to 8500rpm and vtec is dependant on oil pressure, so they need decent oil.

Indeed, because the only thing cooler than not having your car properly serviced is repeatedly informing others that your car has done over 200k and still runs mint ;)

I didnt say day to day use for r888s, I just said the tyre choice must be one of the 3. And in fact I do know of a number of people who do use r888s for every day and get 3-4k out of a set.

40 quid for oem honda pads actually.

You need about 45 quids worth of 5-40 oil (silkolene pro recommended) for a change and 10-15 quid for a hamp filter(unless you buy in bulk) + labour = around 80 quid.

edit - too slow. Thanks for answering neil :)

ive driven a few cars on r888s and grip levels compared to "road tyres" was just comical and imo total overkill, esp when you consider theyll last about 3000 miles if driven half sensibly, a tenth of that if given hell.

as for lifting off the throttle and everything coming to a stop, that was me joking about the amount of grip they have.

as for brakes, teg brakes are £40 for hawks? if so, win win, considering you get charged £80 for a £60 oil changed

your clutches are pretty dear too, but the friend of mine i help to do his clutch change was being quoted over 5 times the cost by garages. i take it there is "jap scene" tax to an extent if its not a straight forward UK car

Theres no real jap scene tax when you consider what aftermarket support you have in the states.

There pretty cheap to run really.

I was giving the guy rough prices, yes its prob about 65-70 quid or so for an oil change if nothing else needs doing (theres an oil service every 4.5k miles). Yes other consumables are relatively cheap oem pads are actually 39 quid I just looked them up on my last service bill and better pads such as hawks are only a bit more (although harder to get hold of).

Clutches are around 170 quid and last about 70k miles so I wouldn't say hugely over priced for a good quality oem item? And no there isnt really any scene tax past actually buying the thing in the first place. Parts are generally good prices.

Be cheap to run on parts, but ab it steep to purchase in the first place, what were they £20k new, now 11 years down the line they are still asking 25% of the new cost, not many other cars command such a price premium/fan boy tax.

i went from toyo t1r tyres to the RE010's and the difference is definately noticable. Will be sticking with the RE010's from now on providing i can find them again when they need changing

I dont think they are made anymore as of a month and a bit ago.

nooooooooo, in that case i have no idea what i'll get, will probably look on itr-dc2 and see what's recommended at the time
